google chrome for fastest browser... firefox is what i would recommend for the lightest browser if you are skimping on system resources.

avast and mse take up around the same system resources... i've heard panda cloud uses less... but all of them are fine choices.

Agree with Manchot, Firefox is lighter while chrome is faster. Here is a link to an article that compares a few browsers, Chrome 4, Firefox 3.6
Opera 10.1(beta) and 10.5(pre-alpha), and Safari 4.0.4.

Browser Speed Tests: Firefox 3.6, Chrome 4, Opera 10.5, and Extensions - Browser speed tests - Lifehacker

About anti-virus I've only used Microsoft Security Essentials(and I love it) and AVG which I don't use anymore.

NOD 32 version 2.7

Download NOD32 AntiVirus 2.7.39 - FileHippo.com

Very small, yet powerful and fully USER programmable Anti Virus- And ESET has not yet pulled a LAVASOFT by suddenly YANKING definition updates for it!

IE8 - Seems like they got it finally, correct, so I am happy with that. I never liked the idea of installing more than one of a program that has a certain function. Why do I need 15 different Browsers? I don't so I use IE, since it is basically built in to the whole structure of the OS - If Microhard were to REMOVE it, if they were to provide an OS with NO native browser, THEN I'd use FireFocks or Chrome, but I hate those, I think Opera is the best "By Itself" browser: So if I ever need to install an excess browser, Opera it will be, if they still make it or if it has not been absorbed by Symantpoop.

But try out NOD32 2.7 - It doe not take over the whole PC like McNorton does. Fooey!

Chrome takes up about 17000 kb of memory with one theme and Firefox takes up around 22500 with yet only one theme as well.

MSE + Google Chrome 4 is an awesome combination for netbooks with 1 GB RAM and 10-inch screens.
