    hi !

    welcome to the forum BinkerNate.

McAfee has something similar to Norton Safe Web, McAfee siteadvisor:
McAfee SiteAdvisor Software ? Website Safety Ratings and Secure Search

i have tried it, but only for a short period before i started using a2 (see below),
iīve seen other members here saying it sometimes gives "wrong info".

another option is a HOSTS-file, which also blocks unsafe websites, mvps.org has a regularly (monthly) updated HOSTS-file:
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

iīm using a-squared (a2) antimalware which also blocks unsafe sites, AND the HOSTS-file above.
    www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/

a2 is very good at detecting viruses & malware and it uses very little memory
(at least on my computer )
a-squared uses 620kB memory for realtime protection !

So with Norton going in less than 8 days, I have some choices: Microsoft Security Essentials, and A-squared. What-if I got....both of them? Would that be bad, or because one does one thing and the other can others, it won't be bad to have both? What do you guys think?

P.S. Just so everyone knows, I want to thank you guys for helping me out. Like any of you guys, like anyone else, you don't want to get screwed, computer-related. Thanks!

yes that would bad and unnecessary. As a general rule, av software doesn't like other AV software. In the best case, you will slow down your computer. In the worst case, you will crash the computer.

Install Microsoft Security Essentials and never look back. You will not regret the decision.

More likely that windows firewall is doing the blocking but in any case,

If you want to avoid many types of problems, then do not use any peer-to-peer type of program.

Getting my new computer back on 1/1/10, it came with Norton Security Scan. Compared with my old computer and security; the fact that it shows what sites are safe or not, what attack was attempted but stopped because of it, etc. It is better, and I want to keep it.

However, it has been stating that time is running out and we're at 14 days now (at the time of this post) until it goes. I tried renewing it, only to have it go to a japanese site, and not being able to renew it as it says an error had occured. So I'm stuck.

I need help in keeping Norton. Is there a way?

P.S. I like Norton for what it does, as stated above. But, if there is something out there that does the exact same thing and is better than Norton (because there always seems to be something better than the other), let me know.

I second Jon's suggestion: Microsoft Security Essentials + Windows Firewall + use the WOT (web of Trust) add-on with your browser.

If you are using Firefox, then by all means use the NoScript add-on.

    wrong !

you are right that running 2 or more antivirus-programs with realtime-protection
can cause a lot of problems, but wrong about a-aquared.

a-squared (a2) can be used together with (almost) all other antivitus-programs,
fx. a2 works very well together with MSE, Avira & Avast.

    hi !

MSE, Avira & Avast are very good antivirus-programs.
a-squared (a2) is also very good, especially at detecting malware, there is also a FREE version of a2.
    a-squared Free - Free of charge Anti-Virus, Anti-Trojan, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Dialer and Anti-Worm Software - Freeware!

Windows FW is good at blocking INCOMING, but it doesnīt block OUTGOING connections, which is the big problem with most firewalls.
Windows Firewall CAN block outgoing connections.
but the problem is that it doesnīt block by default, you have to create rules, which requires a lot of work.
iīve done some tests on different firewalls, and WF has a lot of leaks.

Comodoīs firewall is what iīm using right now, because it has a very good protection, 100% score at Matousec, and it also blocks all unwanted OUTGOING connections.
in fact, it was the only firewall of those tested that really blocked.

if you want a really good FREE firewall, but not Comodo,
then i suggest one of those at the top of the list: PC-Tools, OnlineArmor, Outpost.
i have not used PC-Tools as itīs earlier versions had some problems with Firefox, but now that it also has a 100% score, iīm considering trying it, just because of this toolbar-crap etc. with Comodo.

i have used OnlineArmor (earlier version), it had some problems on Windows 7,
    but worked well on Vista.
i know Outpost works well on Windows 7, itīs also a lot easier to configure than Comodo, so itīs a good suggestion for normal users.

Comodo & PC-Tools firewalls are at the top at:
    Results and comments - www.matousec.com

i have not tried PC-Tools, since it had problems with Firefox in earlier versions.

BUT, if you choose Comodo, do *NOT* install the "hopsurf-toolbar" !
itīs considered a security risk by experts, (Corinne) and since itīs prechecked when you install, you *MUST* uncheck those 3 "options".

i really recommend it, have used it on Windows 7 since Windows 7-beta,
works great and also has Defence+, that keeps an eye on every program that wants to run.

Firewall Software Download | Free Computer Protection

also get Winpatrol, which is a "must have-program", itīs a free program that also monitors your PC.
itīs recommended by experts, fx. Corinne.

Jeez, I hate it when I start an argument by accident. He, sorry.

Does Microsoft Security Essentials (I'm going to refer to it as MSE) also have this: if I'm on a site, but something happens like a freeze or a ad that goes as far as to play up the idea that I'm seeing my own computer folder (even though it isn't), I get out and a message comes up that basically says "a recent attack has occured, and has been blocked from your computer". Does MSE have that feature?

P.S. I did have avast, but only on my old computer. And I don't know if it was avast, or my old computer, but having it made my computer slow on booting up. But it was good to have, though because of that memory, I'm not going to be quick in getting that back.
