Best and free dont often cross paths. I prefer eset smart security (AV and commercial grade firewall). It just works, you dont have to be a rocket scientist, just install it and forget it.

if your firewall is so intrusive that it prevents you from installing or playing a game on your PC, it's time to ditch it and look for a replacement..

try a few and see what you think of them - people all have their own preferences..

I just use Windows firewall with UAC enabled, and AVG free edition anti-virus. Never had any problems with it. Only ever had a few viruses, but they've been picked up no problems.

In most cases the firewall will either block the game or not.

Are you meaning anti-virus and preventing scanning of the game while you're playing?

Many Anti-Virus suites know its a game and do not scan its files while your playing. Or do not repeat scan known safe files, unless the are being changed.

If you're using a Anti-Virus that activly scans everything, all the time no matter what, simply exclude the games folder.

Security Shield 2010 is good and relatively well priced. I think it's based on FSecure technology.
It has a Gaming Mode on it which is really easy to select, and it can auto detect (or manually) when you enter full screen mode while gaming.

I game without a problem using Windows Firewall. Not sure what you mean "firewall for a gamer". Firewalls will not improve framerates or effect ping times.
