NOD32 caused slow-down, AVAST hasn't
I wanted to post this for future readers as the info is in a thread that does not have "NOD32" in the title. (W7 64-bit as slow as Vista 32-bit? Your experience?)
I recently did a fresh install of W7 Ultimate 64-bit, and as I have done for years, installed my trusty NOD32 AV [vers 2.7]. The program seemed to work seamlessly at first, but then after being on the system for awhile I'd notice that when I tried to delete even a small file, the progress bar would pop up and it would take several seconds to delete. This behavior was finally proven to be the AMON scanner in NOD32, (thanks to WindowsStar for thinking out loud and leading me in the right direction). What was odd is that sometimes I could boot and it wouldn't do this for the entire day... the next day, it might do it within an hour of booting, and once the behavior started, even a [warm] reboot would not fix it.
The other problem I had (which I Googled months back and know is a common complaint with NOD32), is that when I would download a file, the system would hang at the last few bits...then when NOD's scanner finally kicked it, it would take an inordinate amount of time to scan the file. While this was occurring, the system was frozen. Very irritating!
I thought it might be b/c my version vers of NOD32 was so old. I downloaded the latest trial version for 64-bit (v 4.0.474.x IIRC). Again, for the first hour or so everything was peachy. Then very soon I had the same behaviors.
As a result, after years of using NOD32, I switched to AVAST Free edition, and no more problems! Not only that, AVAST found 4 infections that NOD32 allowed on board (archived files from previous systems)... one of which had a rootkit.
I know everyone has their favorite programs, (FTR NOD32 and AVAST both got perfect scores in the latest VB100 tests in W7 and all other OSs), but if you are having funky delays in W7 or Vista (I had these same problems in Vista 32-bit when I had NOD32 running), I'd try switching to another AV program.
I *am* curious to know if other NOD32 users have noticed either of these behaviors... the slow deletes OR the hanging at the very end when downloading a file? ... I wonder if it has to do with the chipset or CPU? I know I have had the hanging problem even on my desktop... about the only thing it has in common with my laptop is that I am an AMD and nVidia fan, so all my systems use AMDs. (And my desktop also uses an nVidia graphics card, like my laptop, but the chipset on the desktop is not nVidia.)
