Many definitions of best. One that causes the least BSOD's. One that has the fewest false positives/negatives. One that uses the least system resources, etc

This is the age old question. It is the one you will use intelligently. Each major variant will have its zealots, each best for them.

Disclaimer
I dont use Microsoft Security Essentials ( and no I wont tell you what I do use) but it causes the least BSOD.s, uses few resources (~50 Mb) and sits quietly doing its job

The best AV available is a matter of opinion not necessarily based on fact.

There are a number of companies that regularly test and review anti-virus software. It's a good idea to check these out as it will give you an idea of the level of performance of the software you're looking for.

Keep in mind though, test results vary (for many different reasons) A program that got the top spot in one test, may not be the best in another. That's why I recommend you visit a few different sites and compare the results.
A few good places to start are:

AV-Comparatives
Virus Bulletin

If you are still unsure about a product, you can always download a trial version and test it out. Most vendors offer trials on their websites.

Also suggest you consider using SuperAntiSpyware & Spyware Blaster as well. Both have free versions.

I would suggest Avast free anti-virus.
It does not bother you and moves any threat detected to it's vorus vault.

The best AV usually turns out to be the one you feel comfortable with and keep up to date with the latest defs.

But also having common sense to use safe surfing habits, avoiding shady sites and resisting the urge to click on something when it pops up screaming "YOU'RE INFECTED!!!!! CLICK ME NOW!!!!!" goes a long way.

I would choose between Avira, Avast, Panda, or Mse. If you add Sandboxie to the mix, it wont matter as much which one you choose as long as its not crashing your rig of course. Sandboxie free is the answer
