Great forum guys...! And coming to my question as we all know there are many free av's availabe..i cant afford to get a paid version for my desktop..so guys can you tell me amongst the available free av's which is best(for win7 or does it matter which os i have)...? Avast or avira...or any other...? And which other security softwares can be accompanied with the av program...
As you already have read, choosing an AV is very subjective. It depends on many variables. I won't bore you by repeating what others already had said.

I'll just tell you what I use....

For " real time " protection ; I use Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).
For " on demand " protection, I use Malwarebytes. I used to have Spybot Search & Destroy in my Vista machine, but not in this new Win7.

What is " real time " protection ?
The security program turns on and running automatically the moment you turn on your computer.

    What is " on demand " ?
It does not run until you manually turn it on for scanning. When it is finished scanning, you exit the program and it shuts down until next time you turn it on.

If you have an Old or Slow system get Microsoft Security Essentials.

It really works well & the interface is very noob friendly

    My big question

Hi everybody ( I am a private individual) not a big business and after years of forking out Dollars for Norton Anti-virus have decide to save some dollars.
My question: What does everybody recommend as the best FREE anti-virus available. While I know this may start an avalanche of replies, I also think that a lot of other people may be interested.
    Cheers......Simo

I've been using Kasperksy (free with bank(, but due to one program having an incompatibility issue I am thinking of going back to a free program.

I have liked my firewall & av being combined though, so I think it's out of:
Commodo Security Suite - Too many pop up messages?
Agnitum Outpost Security Suite - No sandbox
    Fortinet Forticlient

I'm now leaning towards Outpost due to the pop ups on Commodo. Kaspersky has been very unobtrusive - it doesn;t bother me if it doesn't need to, and when it does its a small warning! Eg - will just block something dodgly looking rather than asking if it should!

Any experts available to advise me?Any pros and cons to these programs I should consider?

    Thanks

    my setup

AV is important... depends how you use it & also the overall approach to security is critical...

    My realtime setup

    1. hardware firewall in router
    2. Comodo Firewall + Defense+ HIPS
    3. G Data AV
    4. Trusteer Rapport
    5. WOT running alongside adblocker in Chrome

    Also, as required
MSE, MBAM & SAS for occasional scans

Panda, Mse, Avg, Avira, Avast are the top free ones. Which is best? Im guessing Panda or Avast at the moment. This could change tomorrow
