Avast recognition by Windows 7

I have free Avast and for some reason Windows 7 is not recognizing it as my anti-virus program. How do I configure Windows 7 to recognize Avast as my anti-virus program?

Thanks for helping.

Reinstall Avast, then restart the Avast service (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services). Reboot the computer and see if that helps.

In addition to Product FRED's reply, make sure you're using the latest version 5.

What are the consequences of the Action Center not recognizing the AV, which is what I'm assuming the OP is reacting to, if any?

Anyone know?

Yep it was a known issue with Avast 4.8. No consequences as Avast still runs in active mode. Just Windows wont detect it.

Ok, thanks Dinesh.

I remember there was at least one major AV that had the same problem with XP SP2's Security Center when it was first implemented, I think it was NAV, and as a practical matter, didn't affect NAV's functions.

Thanks everyone for the assistance. It doesn't seem to affect the performance of Avast, and I am using version 5, the most recent. So I think I'll just disable the notices...it's apparently a problem only in the eyes of the Operating System.

Nice choice with Avast. I wonder what accounts for the difference in the OS (action center I mean) not seeing Avast. Do u have an additional third-party firewall.

In Windows XP it was sometimes necessary to rebuild the repository to correct inaccurate information in the security center. Can this be an issue in Windows 7 as well?
