The best internet security is common sense.
Grab a copy of Avira though, and also Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPER Anti-spyware.
All I have used since October is Microsoft Security Essentials with a weekly boost (sometimes more) of Malwarebytes. Have had absolutely 0 problems with MSE and will continue to use it exclusively until it proves to me it's not good enough.
Whatever you choose, just be sure to keep MalwareBytes' handy for if your security is compromised or if you know something's fishy but your AV's not picking it up. IMO, it's really between Avira and MSE. I would highly recommend Avira, but I have also heard great things about MSE.
.
As you can see we all have our favorites. I've been using Norton Internet Security 2010. It works just fine and I would recommend it. I also use Prevx with SafeOnline (free offer through Facebook) and MalwareBytes Antimalware for "on demand" scanning. Winpatrol and Panda USB Vaccine are also free.
Norton is a very good choice (I recommend it) but so is MSE (not a security suite) and Avira as mentioned above.
What's the Best Anti-virus?
Hi,
the best security which you can get is security based on 3 layers of protection:
1. Prevention (HIPS software, sandboxes, sandbox policy software, virtualization software, firewalls, UAC, LUA, SRP and DEP.
2. Detection (all AV/AM/AS also software like HIDS)
3. Cure (image backup software, data backup software, ISR software)
All these layers are very important for your security, and there is a rule that you can not rely on only one (mentioned above) layer of protection - it's critical. Depends on your needs and habits you should adjust it to your needs and find the optimal solution.
And remember... Security is a process, not a product.

Very well put Creer! Here's what I use,
1) UAC on high asking for credentials
2) SRP deny all including Admin
3) DEP on for all programs and services
4) Malware Defender HIPS (My favorite security app)
5) Avast with file shield and behavior shield only
6) Hitman Pro for on demand (MBAM maybe soon since I won a free license)
7) Windows 7 Firewall Control Plus (Not really needed but I like it, Win 7 Firewall is disabled)
8) DefenseWall 3.0 (Sometimes I go with AppGuard)
9) Comodo Time Machine (Sometimes I go with Eaz-Fix Pro)
10) Windows System Image & Backup
QFT! I didn't even have antivirus for several years, 5+, and NEVER got a virus I had to train my wife in these ways after she opened an email that was a virus, but Trend Housecall fixed. I can spot phishing scams a mile away. When a link shows a different URL than it says, or looks suspicious, IP address only, etc. It helps that I don't use the internet for shady things, and when I do search, I try to use known safe sites, etc. Nowadays I just use MSE as it is free and seems to work well.
