Depends Avast 5 Would do a better job than MSE (Microsoft sercurity essentials) and be reliable but for free and quick I would use MSE but why don't you check out others like.

    Malwarebytes
    Spybot S&D 6.2
    Windows Defender
    AVG 9.0
    Nod32
    Norton

All got good reputation I beleive. for better protection I'am using the following

    AVG 9.0
    Malwarebytes
    Spybot S&D 6.2
    Windows defender
    MSE
and have Firewall on and set automatic updates to download and install auto

    I have no problems.

    In my opinion, Avast! 5.

Both, you could try to use both, a lot of people do that for more security - i have had used that combo .. never had any problems.

Personally, I use MSE for speed reasons.

I have come to the conclusion that every AV will let some things through, and that nothing is perfect.

Therefore, use a fast, free one. Avast and MSE are both very good, but I find that MSE is a bit faster and more lightweight.

At this time i'm using both and in a few months i will likely choose one or the other... MSE is young so at this point i'm just testing it... GL :)

Yes, Avast here too and with every update it just gets better and better IMO.

    .
Regarding updating, how often does Avast 5 check for sigs? When I tried MSE it did not update either reliably or often enough, but that was when it was first released and hopefully it's better.

There is a setting now to update every time a scan is run in MSE.

Consistently on my machines it has always updated definitions at least twice a day during any 24hr session. You can also change the auto-update period.
