I don't like that the Action Center message references both Windows Defender and MSE. Strange. I recall that happening to me in Windows Vista. All of a sudden the anti-malware program that had been installed for some time was not shown as being selected in the Action Center. Yet, it was active. In that case, I clicked the "View Anti-spyware Options" and re-selected the software. All was well after that.

I suggest re-selecting MSE in both categories.

A followup to this discussion....

Nearly a week now and here is what I've noticed. MSE is actually running, it updates every day, runs a scheduled scan every day and for all intents and purposes seems to be working fine. The "Action Center" however does not recognize MSE as running whenever I turn on or reboot the computer. It sends up its "Red Flag" notification and reports that the Virus and spyware protection needs to be turned on, BUT after MSE runs its scheduled scan, the "Red Flag" notification goes away and Action Center reports all antivirus and spyware protection is on and running properly. My conclusion is the problem lies in Action Center and how it gathers info about the system. So I think I'll leave well enough alone with this and hope the new Service pak 1 update will address this. Thanks to all who offered their tips and insights for me, I appreciate them.

Thanks for posting back bnwrx .... AC not totally 'fixed', but MSE works and does what it should

Without going thru' the entire topic again, did you look in services to make sure that MSE isn't on automatic delayed startup type?

Thanks for your reply
it installs as the Microsoft Antimalware Service.

it sounds like your service stack is stalling due to too many startup apps.

WIN key | type MSCONFIG | Enter key | Startup tab
Uncheck everything that is not from either Microsoft or your computer manufacturer. OK your way out and do a restart.

Have no fear, you can always go back to msconfig and checkmark whatever you desire.

Problem gone?

Startup doesn't necessarily mean as in the Run registry keys or startup folder.
