    Microsoft Essentials updates??

Hey there. Why does MSE update in both in two different ways? You can manually update it from it's opening screen of MSE! Then you can update it from Windows update.

I'm not a fan of this. I'd rather see all the updates come via MSE only and not through Windows update motor.

To those what's your take on this? Thanks everyone!

Since it's a Microsoft program, they will of course have it be able to be updated through Windows Update as well as manually through the program. It doesn't really matter which option you use to update the program since it will only update from either or and not both for that specific update.

You could also set Windows Updates to not show updates for other Microsoft programs using step 8 in this tutorial below to not have them there.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi, wickedout.

In addition to Shawn's suggestion, if you "ignore" the Windows Update for MSE, it will still update automatically as before. That is what I elected to do so that I will still receive notice of other product updates.

As explained in the WSUS Product Team Blog:
Microsoft Security Essentials antimalware definitions are now available via WSUS. Microsoft Security Essentials is a core antimalware service for consumers and home-based small businesses that Microsoft released in September of 2009. This was done because academic institutions around the world (particularly in Asia) provide students with low cost or free internet access and provide students with update services through WSUS. Many students are protecting their computers with Security Essentials, and the universities requested that the definition updates be provided via WSUS.

It appears that this change is what resulted in the updates for MSE to begin appearing in Windows Update.

Yeah and if you are using WSUS or another application like BigFix or Altiris, I would suggest always using that method to update. Because if you do some of them through MSE, then you may not see all the updates in your patching application, and won't be able to roll back if needed.
