Windows 7: Win 7 search doesn't work

Win 7 search doesn't work

My Win 7 Search yields only generic folders. Clicking on them gives a security window citing settings in internet security as limiting results display. What the heck does internet security have to do with a desktop search? I also suddenly have UAC markers on some desktop icons that weren't there before. Do I have one problem or more. I'd appreciate some help, please. I have Windows Defender disabled and Windows Security Essentials in place.

Did it ever work? do you have a backup from before the problem started that you can restore from? System specs"? what happened to change it?

Thanks for the reply, Ken. Yes, the Search function originally worked and I'm not sure when it went blooey. The UAC shields started after a reboot yesterday and I'm going to do a restore since I've turned UAC off and they are still there.

Run a scan with your antivirus and this
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes

If you come up with nothing, a system restore should do the trick.

I would go with system restore. It should not change any personal documents, etc.

When you get that internet security message it is because your IE settings are set extremely tight (Maximum safety) and at that level anything you download from the net get's "locked" and you can't open it.

The default settings for IE flag all files downloaded and when you run them you get the "This file was downloaded from the net, are you sure you want to open/run it?" message that I think we (any IE user) are well used to.

So that probably explains it. As for how to unlock a locked "internet" file... I've not actually had to do that so I have no idea

(BTW this seems to be a built in windows thing, not associated with the firewall or MSE or UAC, it's like a new file flag in the file system or something)

I did catch up on some windows updates recently. Maybe something was in those. I don't use IE for my browser, but I went in and reset all security to minimum for a trial but it didn't correct anything. I've now reset all. Thanks for the reply "fseal."
