Having said that, it is still better to have a beginner box covering you than just rely on Windows Firewall... This is getting no where, is it?
zzz2496 Quote: Ps. Carl, if you have some spare money, I suggest you to try Mikrotik - You can learn a lot about firewalls using it's software. If you want, you can try the software for free IIRC. Put it in a VM or old PC, I can show you what a "real" firewall can do. I don't have any extra $$$; but I would like to try it. | My System Specs |

Thank you, Carl
I agree with you on the third party firewall. I already have Online Armor configured. It seems to do a good job and passes the leak test. I don't mind digging a little bit deep and changing a few settings as in Windows firewall, but if I don't have it on file as to how I did it and the proper way to change things back, well you know...... Thanks for all your help,

You are welcome, John.
I run a third party firewall to block going though my hardware firewall does pass the leak test. I will eventually take the time to learn how to do the rules in the Windows firewall and when I am satisfied, I will drop the third party firewall, which is Comodo by the way.
You should be well protected now. Happy computing. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home built OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit CPU Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Motherboard ASUS P4P800-VM Motherboard Chipset: Intel 865G + ICH5 Memory 2.50 GB RAM Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS Sound Card SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio (Chip) Monitor(s) Displays ViewSonic VX 1962 wm Screen Resolution 1680 X 1050 Keyboard Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 v10 USB Mouse Logitec optic USB Cooling Fan based Hard Drives Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 80 GB

I know this is not related to the thread. But can anybody tell me how to test my router's firewall to check if it's correctly configured?

Thanks for the links. When i tested my firewall on grc.com and my computer seems to have a great firewall! All my service ports were detected as "stealth", grc couldn't send me spam, and in the file sharing test they couldn't detect my ports and were unable to connect to NetBios (grc said this was an excellent result).
So my Firewall seems to be up to scratch. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self-built on 31/1/11 OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit CPU Intel i5 2400 @ 3.80 GHz Motherboard Ashrock P67 Extreme 4 Memory Mushkin Silverline 996768 4GB Graphics Card MSI GTX 460 760MB Cyclone Overclocked Sound Card Integrated Monitor(s) Displays Asus VH202T 20" Widescreen Screen Resolution 1600x900 Keyboard Logitech Wireless Keyboard MK520 Mouse Logitech M310 PSU Silverstone Strider 500W Case Zalman Z9 Plus Cooling Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus Hard Drives SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 60GB

Sounds like you did the shields up test. Mine was also stealthed. The firewall test is called leak test. It's a little test that you have to download. That's the one that will tell you if your firewall is working. You can be in stealth mode and totally safe from inbound attacks, yet still fail the leak test. I would download leak test and try again. That's what happened to me. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Home Premium CPU Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz Motherboard Asus P5VD2-MX-XE Memory Physical Memory : 2048 MB (2 x 1024 DDR2-SDRAM ) Graphics Card Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS Sound Card ASUSTeK Computer ALC-660 6-channel CODEC Monitor(s) Displays Monitor Type : Acer X183H - 19 inches Screen Resolution 1366 x 768 Keyboard Logitech Mouse Logitech Hard Drives ATA WDC WD1600JS-60NCB1 Internet Speed DSL 3000 |
