Back to the subject. Security is great. But theres really nothing you can do when the tools to break everything are out there for the useing. Yeah, but isn't that like saying why lock your home some one could just kick the door in or pick the lock. It lowers the chance of that file being viewed by anyone you don't want. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Pro 64bit build v. 7600 SP1 CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.00GHz w/ Zalman 9700 NT Heatsink Motherboard Asus P5N-e SLI Memory Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 4G Graphics Card EVGA Geforce GTX 470 Sound Card Creative X-Fi xtreme music Monitor(s) Displays Dual 24" ASUS VW246H Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Alienware Mouse Logitech G5 PSU Coolermaster 650W Case Coolermaster Cosmos 1000 Cooling Coolermaster and Silverstone 120mm Hard Drives Western Digital 300G Velociraptor hosting Win 7 Pro 64bit

Well, you can do a couple things:
You can zip the file and password protect it.
You can keep it on a FD or other removable media off the system.
You can d/l a freeware like Glary Utilities and it has a built in File Encrypter/Decrypter (as well as some other good tools)

Maybe I'm missing somehting but why is there a need for this? [edit] Or rather why would there be a need for this to be built in?[/edit]
User accounts /automatically/ lock all user files and user created files and folder to that account. The built in ACLs do this for you automatically, though the default is rather loose, i.e. you can still see files but not change them but you can fix that by changing the read permissions for "others" for that folder if you want.
The only way I can see this needed is if you have muclitple people sharing a single account and want to protect "your" files from the "other" user. But just use multiple accounts and it works automatically.
And yes if you REALLY want to protect files, use the built in encrypted folder feature. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Scratch built OS Windows 7 x64 Ultimate CPU i7 960 Motherboard Asus P6X58D Memory 12 Gig Corsair Dominator Graphics Card Nvidia 480 Sound Card Maudio Delta 44 + breakout box Monitor(s) Displays Dell UltraSharp U2410 24in and Samsung 21 dual monitors Screen Resolution 1920x1200 and 1280x1024 Keyboard Logitech G15 + N52 game pad Mouse Logitech MX518 PSU Corasair TX850 Case Cooler Master HAF Cooling Corsair H50 Hard Drives Primary: Intel X-25M G2 160G SSD

Probably the safest way to protect your files is keep them on removable media, off of anything that has public or net access.
Anything that can be encrypted can also be hacked, given enough time. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell Hell oh Well OS Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit CPU Intel Core 2 Duo 2.93GHz Memory Not much with my ADHD Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 4350 Monitor(s) Displays I have one...It's bright.
