    A couple of firewall questions

Im using the lastest Netgear Router i got it when i had my internet upgraded.
so if i turn on the SPI Firewall built in Windows Firewall will be ok if so i have a few questions if you dont mind.

    • If i use windows firewall and spi will it slow my internet connection down (e.g My Downloads)
    • Will it block my from streaming videos and pictures to my Xbox 360 / PS3?
sorry about going off topic i dont see the point of starting a new topic if i only need these few questions asked.
Also i tried disabeing firewall and it still would not work i think your right about having to uninstall it complete i will try that if these questions have the answers im looking for.

Welcome to the Windows 7 Support forum,
Bball, you have 2 firewalls, the first one is your router, unless you open any of your ports you have a mechanical firewall operationg. Your second one would be your software firewall which is in your OS 7.
Your question is if it will slow down your UL/DL speed would be Negative.
After you set your permissions no speed degradation will occur.

The router's NAT feature blocks outside attacks from seeing your IP address. With SPI, the router looks at data for known patterns and discards any malicious data before it can access your network. The Windows firewall would block unsolicited incoming data that gets past the above.

SPI's implementation would, however depend on your specific router model. In cheap home routers SPI will act as a state table with IP and port numbers. Inbound packets are allowed based on what has been requested. Technically it can be said to be SPI, but there would be no actual inspection of TCP headers. You can check with the vendor what exactly is advertised as "SPI".

Generally, SPIs are highly configurable in contrast to the Windows firewall which has very limited configuration.

Use both. There should not be any perceptible slow down using both.

Bball, I believe there are some websites that will test your firewalls. Also some will do port scanning to see if you have any vulnerabilities or open ports on your router.
