    Can I have a virus?

I have been torrenting recently, and of course I scan every file with AVG free and make sure its clean. However, now when I boot up, when I click the desktop I get a black screen with a windows 7 box asking me ifI would like to shutdown. I click cancel and then all my items in the task bar are gone. Any reason why? Thanks in advance

    Hi, jdporter18.

Yes, I believe you've been compromised by malware. Torrents are always going to pose as a high risk, even if you scan everything. A lot of non-established malware is distributed through torrents, which is why antivirus software isn't always going to detect it.

I'd like to ask you to download and install an application known as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, as it will be a necessary tool for cleaning your system.

    Please execute the following instructions:

    • Double-click the 'mbam-setup.exe' file to install this application.
    • Ensure a check mark is placed in the radio box next to 'Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware' and please also make sure that there is a check mark in the radio box next to 'Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware'
    • Click 'Finish'
      • Note: If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please do not interrupt this process.

    • Once the program has loaded, please ensure a check mark is placed in the radio box next to 'Perform Full Scan' (not Perform Quick Scan) and proceed by clicking on 'Scan'.
      • Note: The scan may take some time, so please be patient and wait for it to finish. Please stop all current downloads while your scan is in progress, as this may corrupt the results.

    • When the scan is complete, click 'OK' and then click 'Show Results' to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and proceed by clicking 'Remove Selected'
    • Once disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your machine. If you are asked to restart, please do so.
      • Note: The log is automatically saved by Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and can be viewed by clicking on the 'Logs' tab in the main interface.

    Thanks,

What files are you downloading? Sounds like you picked up something from downloading copyright material

    Hi, jdporter18.

Perhaps Jacee can follow up on your situation, as I'm not allowed to go into further analysis with you. Is there anything else you can tell me about the symptoms? Is this happening every single time your start up?

    Thanks,
    Harvey Meale

There are a few things that you can try... First, from an elevated command prompt, run sfc /scannow to check the integrity of your core system files... If that doesn't help, do a system restore to a point in time before you began having problems... Also, you really need to get in the habit of imaging your system drive as a part of your backup policy... Its a lot easier to restore a system image than doing a reinstall...
