Probably was not removed completely the first time. Do you have a backup from when it was installed that you can restore from?

Your computer probably has remnants of prior AV programs remaining...

In case you are unaware - It is not a good idea to run more than one AV at a time.

Did your computer come preinstalled with an Anti Virus Program?
If so how did you uninstall it?

Before you downloaded & tried to install Avast how did you remove AVG?

I gather you are still running Threatfire... Correct?

Use the custom uninstaller tools for each of the AVs you have used till now. You can download them here.

ESET Knowledgebase - Uninstallers (removal tools) for common antivirus software

    or here

Ultimate Collection of Uninstallers / Removal Tools for All Popular Anti-Virus Software - Tweaking with Vishal

Then reboot. Run CCleaner, both regular and registry, then try installing.

More then likely, you have registry/file remnants left in your system. Most program uninstallers don't get everything.

Revo Uninstaller does a good job of going through your registry and ferreting out any leftover files.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

The free version works as good as the paid version, unless you need the extras that come with the paid one.

thanx for the help. i use revo to uninstall everything, maybe i need to change the settings so it will be more thorough. i used avast first, and when it quit, i then tried avg. now im using threatfire. im using the 64 bit system, would that have caused any kind of problems? by the way, love that aussie pic.

    Hi watcher again,

Always be cautious when using unrelated uninstallers...Often they can do more harm than good.
As for 64bit being part of the problem, I think not. I have been using 64-bit here for a few years, wouldn't swap it!

Re the Aussie pic.....not a human footprint to be found on that isolated beach when I last visited.
