How do you Get rid of White/Black Backgrounds of Images?

    How do you Get rid of White/Black Backgrounds of Images?


    How do you get rid of Black/White(Any color really) backgrounds that have something in the middle of them like making the backgrounds transparent, I've seen an option in Microsoft Paint thats called "Transparent Selection" Are their guides on how to use this? Or maybe another program that is newly updated other than Photoshop?

    And also How can you make a normal .png or .bit into a .ico file?
    How can you access the Icon files? when you "Right click" a Shortcut then "Properties" then "Change Icon...."

    Suggest as many Programs as you can/want.

I have macular degeneration and cannot see colors well. Is there a way to make everything display in black and white only. I need white text on a black background. I have tried reversing the display to this but some pull down menus are then displayed in blue which I cannot see.

It's on the Mac's. An option to make your screen like a negative picture, white is now black, people are ghostly. Any way to do this on the PC?
