I had the same problem. Killing the dwm.exe did not solve the problem, at least in my case.
I even try doing restore to the day before it happens. No luck though..
msdn tech suggest to change resolution and back. but still not solution.
I will try to change driver.
This is a serious flaw / bug I believe. | My System Specs | | |

Did DWM start back on its own when you killed it?
If not, I suggest you don't kill it but restart it (and if Task Manager does not allow for this option, then I suggest that you use Process Explorer
In fact, I suggest everyone use PE to begin with.... | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number The Beast Model V OS Windows 7 Enterprise x64 SP1 | Windows 8 build 7989 CPU Core i7 965 EE @3.6 GHz Motherboard eVGA x58 Classified3 Memory 3 * 4GB Mushkin Enh Redline CL7 DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3-12800) Graphics Card eVGA 560 Ti 448 Core Calssified + eVGA GTX260 SSC (PhysX) Sound Card Realtek HD Audio (onboard) Monitor(s) Displays 2 * Acer X213Wbd Screen Resolution 2 * 1680 x 1050 Keyboard Logitech G15 Keyboard Mouse Logitech MX Revolution '06 PSU ThermalTake BlackWidow TX TR2 850 W Case ThermalTake Level 10 GT (Black) Cooling Corsair H100 CPU | 2 * TT 140mm TriLED | 2 * Antec TriCool Hard Drives 1 * Intel X-25M G2 80 GB SSD Sata II |

I've this issue too. To restore my desktop, I change the screen resolution (with context menu), and revert changes. It works. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Packard Bell OS Windows 7 CPU AMD Turion 64 x2 Memory 3 GB Graphics Card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 Screen Resolution 1280*800 Internet Speed 2 MB |

I have not encountered this issue lately, but there seems to be another thread about in General Discussion as well. I recently bought a DVI-to-VGA cable adapter and am now using the DVI connection of my video card. I have not encountered the problem since I did that, and have been using the slideshow wallpaper since.
To everyone having this problem, are you using VGA or DVI for your monitor input?
(Also, when I did have the problem, screen resolution changes did not fix it for me) | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell 8400 OS Windows 7 Beta 1 b7000 CPU Intel Pentium 4 Memory 4GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD3450 Sound Card Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Monitor(s) Displays Acer AL2016W Screen Resolution 1680x1050 Keyboard Dell Multimedia Keyboard Mouse Logitech MediaPlay Case Dell 8400 Cooling Standard Hard Drives 1x500GB

Got this after running the Windows Experience Index evaluation. A quick remedy for getting your wallpaper and icons back: right click on desktop, Personalize and change the Resolution to something else, Apply and then restore the resolution back to your preferred resolution. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Lenovo T61p OS Windows 7 64bit CPU T9400 Memory 4GB |

Happens to me when exiting RiseOfNations from a lower screen resolution (1240x1024) back to desktop (1680x1050). I have my LCD attached via VGA (motherboard and LCD without any adapter). I also use a background picture slideshow.
I just thought that this could be the problem: The slideshow tries to set another background while being in the game and crashes somehow (may be resolution or DX?), so you experience a black desktop after exiting. Can be verified by tabbing out a game waiting long enough for the slideshow to change background.

Any ideas?
Note, this almost always happens during the transition from Aero to Basic (e.g. if I run a program that doesn't support Aero), but will also happen randomly. I get this "black screen" very rarely. I have a theme pack running, about 6 themes changing every 3/4 hours.
