What am I missing here that says that you can't simply go back to a point in time before all of the experimentation/whatever began? Even if this means you have to reinstall some program that you've installed in the meantime, I would think that a System Restore would do the job without having to mess around directly with the registry.

The two things that I finally did seems to have worked for me on a 64 bit Windows 7 OS

1) removed uxtheme patch, will be reinstalling it now

2) followed steps mentioned in the following article

Folder Template - Default

Glad to hear that you've solved the problem.

I can not recommend the failure to use System Restore points, which is not the same as system repair, sytem image restore.

System Restore, in Win 7 works perfectly, not like we had in Vista.

System Restore has saved me from having to do a 100% reinstall several times.

I recommend using System Restore VERY STRONGLY!

WIN | type What is System Restore | Enter key

where WIN is the key with the wavy flag.
System Restore
System Restore Point - Create
Startup Repair
Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

This solved it

JosephPatrick's linked solution was the one which solved the problem (get ride of Extended Tiles in Explorer.

I believe my problem resulted from migration from Vista to Windows 7. On my older XP system I just installed Windows 7 and that system did not have Extended Tiles. I believe it was a "lingering effect" of the registry setting for Vista.

Thank you for the easy and effective solution.
