WTF? You run setup.exe from a partition or drive you have no intention of installing Windows 7 on and them BAM, like magic, Windows 7 just installs to the drive/partition you want without ever being told to?

Extract the ISO to a partition or drive that you don't want to install Windows 7 to (will call this drive D)

Second run the setup.exe from those extracted files on the D drive and choose to install Windows on the drive you want to install to (Will call this C)

The Setup screen actually quite clearly asks you "WHERE DO YOU WANT TO INSTALL WINDOWS!!!!"

If that isn't a clue than I don't know what is...

Hey guys I tried using this method.I now have a 40GB IDE that has XP PRO and wanna install 7 on a new SATA I have.So I extract the iso file to my IDE then run the setup.exe.

I selected to install 7 on my SATA.It goes well at 'Copying Windows File',but at 'Expanding Windows file',at 27%,the computer will restart,then it goes back to the setup,then restarts again,then I don't know how,but the setup will fail and it will boot back into my XP Pro!!The error I get is 'Windows 7 installation was not successful.Previous version of Windows was restored,etc.'

What the hell is wrong?Retarded installation setup!!!And you know,when starting the install,the setup will say 'Copying temporary files' right?It takes a bloody long time!!

thats it, you will then be booted on the windows installation then just follow the instructions on how to install it..i think i made it clear..lol

I just purchased an ultra light laptop that does not have a cd drive. It came installed with Windows 7 Home Premium and I'm trying to upgrade it to Windows 7 Ultimate for which I have an ISO image. I followed the instructions in this post and created a new partition. Then extracted the contents of if the Win7 installation ISO to the new partition. When I go into disk managment and right click on the new partition, the "mark as active" option is not an available option. This option only exists on the C drive which is where the current installation resides.

I need a way to boot to the new partion which contains the Win7 setup files so that I can upgrade.

Can you help? I dont understand why I dont have that the mark as active option as you described above.
