Windows 7: Optimize Windows 7

Mr. B, just an initial inquiry. Saw little? on HD capacity. With 2 pc's and one with fairly-well noticeable bigger capacity, and PC1 really snappy-fast but PC-2 lags-slower, wondering if just that difference makes a difference in performance? And to know to compare the two PC's against each other performance-wise will be wonderful if that is possible. Thanks for all your help past and present, really appreciated. Jim

Hello James,

Hard drive capacity really wouldn't have any affect on performance unless the drive is close to being full. Using a SSD instead of HDD for your OS drive would give you the biggest boost in performance since a SSD is a lot faster than a HDD.

The best way to compare two PCs against each other is to run a benchmark program like "PCMark" on both.

Futuremark - what benchmark should I use?

Went thru the PCMARK7 benchmark routine but just got a total score to compare between PC1 & PC2.

What is needed is (me thinks) a PC1 comparison of specific windows performance operations to see why PC1 way out performs PC2. Some specific operations seem to be CPU, GPU, Memory, Motherboard, Storage, Operating System, Background Application, and that.

Have you got any ideas on how to do specific performance tests on such individual operations?

Was looking over Win7- events to see if troubles might show up there but have not got the hang of that one yet. Got your great tut on these win7 events tho and am studying now.

Your help is really really appreciated. Jim

You should have 5 different tests to run in PCMark 8.

Ok, your saying to use pcmark8 rather than pcmark7, correct? When searching pcmark I came up with the statement that pcmark7 provided the "PC Performance Tests for Windows 7": PCMark - complete performance testing

Both should have them, but PCMark 8 is just newer.

What I did is run what was downloaded (Download PCMark 7 - MajorGeeks) with the sole result being the score on both PC1 & PC2). Do you know of any PCMARK "how to" help web page to know what might maybe have went wrong, if anyting?
