How to Delete Typed URLs in Internet Explorer Auto Suggest Drop Down List
Information
This will show you how to delete items included in the auto suggest drop down list from when you had typed valid URLs previously in the Internet Explorer address bar and pressed enter in Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.
EXAMPLE: Internet Explorer Auto Suggest Drop Down List
NOTE: For example, the valid URLs boxed in red in the screenshots below are paths that I had manually typed in the Internet Explorer address bar and pressed enter. The right screenshot is with them deleted.
OPTION ONE
In Internet Explorer
NOTE: This option will allow you to either delete all or specific listed suggested URLs that you had typed previously in the Internet Explorer address bar and pressed enter.
1. Open Internet Explorer.
NOTE: In Windows 8, you would open the IE10 desktop version, and not the IE10 Metro (Windows UI) version.
2. As you are typing the URL path to a website, you will get a drop down list of suggested URLs IE thinks that you are trying to type. (see screenshot below)
3. Select a listed URL in the drop down list that you want to delete, then click/tap on the red
X to the right of it. (see screenshot below)
4. Repeat for any other listed URL that you want to delete from this list.
OPTION TWO
Using Internet Options
NOTE: This option will delete all listed suggested URLs that you had typed previously in the Internet Explorer address bar and pressed enter.
1. Open the
Control Panel (Icons view), and click/tap on the
Internet Options icon.
A) Go to step 3.
OR
2. Open Internet Explorer, click/tap on
Tools (
Menu bar), and click/tap on
Internet Options.
NOTE: In Windows 8, you would open the IE10 desktop version, and not the IE10 Metro (Windows UI) version.
3. Click/tap on the
General tab, then click/tap on the
Delete button under
Browsing history. (see screenshot below)
4. Check at least the
History box, then click/tap on
Delete. (see screenshot below)
5. Click/tap on
OK. (see screenshot below step 3)
OPTION THREE
Using a REG File Download
NOTE: This option will delete all listed suggested URLs that you had typed previously in the Internet Explorer address bar and pressed enter.
1. To Delete All Typed URLs in Internet Explorer Auto Suggest
A) Click/tap on the download button below to download the file below.
Delete_All_Windows_Explorer_Auto_Suggest_Typed_URLs.reg
2. Save the
.reg file to the
Desktop.
3. Double click/tap on the downloaded
.reg file to merge it.
4. Click/tap on
Run,
Yes (Windows 7/8) or
Continue (Vista),
Yes, and
OK when prompted.
5. If open, close and reopen Internet Explorer to apply the changes.
6. When done, you can delete the downloaded
.reg file if you like.
OPTION FOUR
Manually in Registry Editor
NOTE: This option will allow you to either delete all or specific listed suggested URLs that you had typed previously in the Internet Explorer address bar and pressed enter.
1. Open the Start Menu, then type regedit in the search boxand press Enter.
2. If prompted by
UAC, then click/tap on
Yes (Windows 7/8) or
Continue (Vista).
3. In regedit, navigate to the location below. (see screenshot below)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs
4. To Delete All Typed URLs in Auto Suggest
A) In the right pane of TypedURLs, select all url# string values, and click/tap on Delete. (see screenshot above)
NOTE: To select multiple url# string values at once, you can press and hold the Shift key, click on each url# string value, then release the Shift key.
B) Go to step 6.
5. To Only Delete Specific Typed URLs in Auto Suggest
A) In the right pane of TypedURLs, select the specific url# string values that have the typed path in the Data column that you want to delete, and click/tap on Delete. (see screenshot below step 3)
NOTE: To select multiple url# string values at once, you can press and hold the Shift key, click on each url# string value, then release the Shift key.
6. Click/tap on
Yes. (see screenshot below)
7. Close regedit.
8. If open, close and reopen Internet Explorer to apply the changes.
