No need to reinstall everything. You should be able to just create new shortcuts for any program that doesn't already have one in the new account.

    Couldn't change user name

    Hi,
I went through your steps carefully to change my "User" account file name to "Michael". It did not work and the Michael user account suddenly became "Temporary" and I could not save files, etc. I tried to do a system restore to undo it but that did not work -- in fact, the system restore could not finish its task for some reason. In order to get into my account, I had to go back and reset the several places in your protocol from "Michael" to "User" again and then I could access the account as before.

So I have an account labelled "Michael" but the User directory still calls is "User" and changing it using your protocol rendered it a "Temp" user. Strange. Not that important, I can live with my main user being called "User" but it's odd that Windows wouldn't change the name when I did it.

    FYI. Thanks anyway.

Hello. I am new to this forum, apologies if the answer can be found elsewhere on here. I realize this is an old thread and will create a new one later if necessary.

Can a variation of this method be used to change ONLY the User Account Folder Name, while leaving the account name as is? That seems to be the implication of the title of this topic, but details seem to indicate otherwise.

Due to a screwup when 1st creating 2 accounts, let's call them ADMIN and USER, the ADMIN-account folder name is 'USER' and the USER-account folder name is 'USER_2'. I can live with it, everything works OK but I would like to clean this up if possible so that the folder names correspond to the account names.

    Thank you.

Hello sybernut, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm afraid that this would affect both the user profile folder name and account name.

In you case, it may be better to delete the account, and create a new one for what you wanted instead. You'll need to temporarily create an administrator account to do all this while logged in to it.

Hello Brink, thank you for the prompt reply Is there a simple way to transfer ALL files under an account-to-be-deleted to a new account? I seem to recall that Windows offers you the option of keeping the files of the old account upon account deletion, but there must be many references to the old account/directory names in many of those files (e.g. OS-related files).

Can such a migration be made transparent to OS and to apps (and otherwise)? I am concerned about e.g. some apps not working correctly after I do this. I would probably create a disk image prior anyway :) It seems I would either have to delete both accounts, or rename them both as per your procedure (which seems quite involved :) )

Usually, it doesn't work out to well when trying to copy over anything from one user account to another other than just the files in the user folders (ex: Music, Documents, Pictures, etc..). Those can be copied to another location temporarily until you can move them to the new account.

I followed all the steps in this tutorial and now the account I tried changing the user folder name for is completely absent from the Welcome Screen! Everything on the account is still on the computer, thankfully, but I cannot access it from that account. I've done something horribly wrong. I need help with this ASAP.

I do have a recent system restore point I can use (although I'll lose a few funny drawings I made today) if there is no way to bring the account back.
