How to Fix Cannot Rename Library in Windows 7 and Windows 8

       Information
If you cannot rename a library in your user account by right clicking on the library folder and clicking on Rename, then this will show you how to fix this so that you will be able to rename it afterwards in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

    OPTION ONE

Fix Cannot Rename a Library using a BAT File

    1. Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below.
    Delete_Libraries_Desktop.ini.bat

    Download

    2. Save the .bat file to your desktop.

    3. Double click/tap on the bat file to run it, and click/tap on Run if prompted.
NOTE: You will notice that a command prompt window will quickly flash open and closed as the bat file runs.

    4. See if you are able to rename the library now.

    5. You can now delete the downloaded bat file if you like.

    OPTION TWO

Fix Cannot Rename a Library using in Command Prompt

    1. Open a command prompt in Windows 7 or Windows 8.

    2. In the command prompt, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
    DEL /F /Q /A "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries\desktop.ini"

       Note
If you get a Could Not Find error as below, then this just means that the desktop.ini file has already been deleted and you can continue on to step 3 below.

    3. Close the command prompt, and see if you are able to rename the library now.

    OPTION THREE

Fix Cannot Rename a Library using in Windows Explorer

    1. In Folder Options, do step 4 in OPTION ONE here: Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide

    Library - Cannot Rename Fix-.jpg
    2. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, copy and paste the path below into Run, and press Enter.
    %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries
    3. In the Libraries folder, right click or press and hold on the desktop.ini file, and click/tap on Delete. (see screenshot below)

    4. In Folder Options, do step 5 in OPTION ONE here: Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide

    Library - Cannot Rename Fix-off.jpg
    5. See if you are able to rename the library now.
    That's it,
    Shawn

After checking "Hide protected OS files" in folder options and going to %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries I don't see any desktop.ini file
    What do I do?
    Thanks

    Hello Rookie,

Double check to make sure that you also have Show hidden files, folders, and drives checked in folder options as well.

    Hope this helps. :)

I forgot to mention that I could rename libraries before downloading SP1 (actually a thread on that brought me here), but after installing it the names of the libraries were restored and every time I tried to rename one it would simply and immediately change back to its default name. But this morning when I turned on the computer the libraries had the names I gave them before. Maybe this tutorial needs the additional step of restarting windows, or at least it may be necessary in some cases, I don't know. But thank you, anyway.

I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted. It may have been an issue of SP1 just being installed and needing to restart the PC to complete it.

    Hello,

I got real troubles with this.

I've been able to rename "some" of my libraries with no problem. But I can't rename my "Music" folder.
I tried to rename it as "Müzik", and now "sometimes" it shows as "Müzik" but sometimes it turns back to original (Music)

Why and how could this be happening?

BG info: I changed my user profile location from the registery (right after installation)
And I use dual boot with XP

    Thx in advance

Hello Merket, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if deleting your Music library, restore default Libraries, then rename library to Müzik may help.

If not, then check to see what the folder is named for the My Music string value (right pane) in the two registry key locations (left pane) below in regedit.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

    (C:\Users\your-user-name\Müzik)

    and

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

    (%USERPROFILE%\Müzik)

    Hope this helps, :)

Thank you so much Shawn, for your kind and informative reply.

I don't know how, but my library started to display as "Müzik" in the explorer, just as I wanted and it doesn't change anymore.

But in real path names it's "music" as I checked it from the registry keys you've given. I don't think it will create a problem, since it's like renaming the shortcuts.

    Thank you again.

Merket, I'm happy to hear it changed for you. It's always nice when it does it automatically for you. :)
