hi shawn
i have a notebook with Vista now i want to a clean install 7 on it.
But you know there is a hiden recovery partition in hdd. if i press F9 at the beginning it starts recovery process.
now i want to learn must i backup this recovery partition's MBR? And how?
i ask because before i do this (clean install 7 over Vista) on another notebook and now F9 key don't work
and now i don't want to loose this function of F9 key
Hello Nonpasaran,
I suppose the easiest way would be to create a complete clone of you hard drive as a backup using something like the free program Macrium Reflect Free Edition. This way, you can restore the hard drive as it is now with all partitions from the cloned backup if you should ever decide to.
I would also recommned to create a set of OEM recovery discs to have to be able to a factory restore with as a secondary backup. You should be able to create a set from the "OEM (ex: HP) Recovery Management" type program in the Start Menu.
Hope this helps,
Shawn
Hi. I've installed Win7 3 times now during RC2 testing and now with a retail copy.
I must ask, during the format part of the install is the only option a Quick format?
I ask because I'm going to reinstall soon and would like my Intel Gen2 SSD drive to be completely reformatted in the process. Will deleting all the partitions have that effect?
Thanks.
It looks as if setup will only do a quick format. If you want to do a full format, you will need to use Diskpart.
Instead of clicking Install Now, press Shift+F10 to pull up a command prompt.
Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command
Then enter the following:
diskpart
list disk
select disk [# of the disk you want to format]
clean all
That will completely format the drive, and delete all partitions.
Then you can start setup again.

Thanks for the additional edit JK.
I'll leave the diskpart.exe on C: and also put it on a floppy, I guess that way I'll be safe right?
Great reply, exactly what I needed.
You don't need to copy diskpart at all; it is built-in to the setup program.
When you get to the install screen, just press Shift+F10, and a command prompt will pop up. Just enter diskpart.
