Couple of queries concerning Windows Defender Offline…

I have recently cut the WDO iso file to DVD. On running the application at startup, by default it ran a quick scan without the option of full or custom scan. Is there anyway to adjust this default setting to full scan?

Secondly, the DVD where WDO is housed is re-writable, is it possible to download virus definition updates & write to the WDO - DVD.

Any assistance on offer would be appreciated.

Hi,

As far as I know, you cannot do that. If you use a USB instead, then the definitions will be updated and written to the USB when WDO runs. Please refer to this:

You posted this while I was composing my post. Sorry - I did not know that you had read my post or I would not have deleted it. Once I saw your post and the MS FAQ, I got to thinking about the problem of keeping the WDO engine in sync with the definitions.

For those that did not see my post:
WDO and MSE use the same virus definition file. You can directly download that file and update a WDO DVD/CD - but I'm not so sure that it is smart to do that.

You might be able to create a totally new ISO file with the WDO tool and then create a bootable media over and over using DVD/CD-RW.

When I ran Defender Offline (from a bootable CD) I did not have the option to update (no Update button) but my definitions were up to date since I use Security Essentials. I also did not have the option of what type of scan to run (no such checkboxes) and it just went right into a quick scan. What do you make of that?

It has been a while since I ran WDO from a CD - so I cannot speak to the update button...

WDO is not going to use the definitions that are on the hard drive being checked.

Hello Rob,

Only a created WDO on USB will be able to use the update option.

When WDO is finished with it's intial default quick scan, you will have the options to select what type of scan you would like to do. :)

I have a quick question,

I need to make a WDO USB drive, but the computer I'm trying to fix is a 64 bit (Windows 7 64 bit home Premium) laptop. The computer I normally use is a 32 bit (Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit). Which should I do- Download the file onto the laptop and make the bootable media in safe mode (currently it's the only way to successfully boot the computer), or can I make the 64bit WDO on a 32bit computer, as long as I use the 64bit exe?

Sorry if this is explicitly outlined somewhere, it must have escaped my eyes.

Sorry, but you will not be able to create a 64-bit WDO on a 32-bit Windows. It can only be created on a 64-bit Windows.

Do you have a friend with a 64-bit Windows that you could use to create the WDO on?

Would I be able to make the usb drive whilst in safe mode of the computer I'm trying to fix? (safe mode with networking, I guess :P)

If you can get it to boot to it, then yes you should be able to.
