How to Upload to Windows SkyDrive from Windows 7 Desktop

If you have a windows live account then you'll love this!
If you don't, get one, the free 25GB is amazing

I'll show you how to set up your PC to upload your files directly to Windows SkyDrive through the 'send to' context menu.

1. Firstly you'll need the free starter edition of Gladinet cloud Desktop

2. When it's finished downloading, install it. You'll see that it's added a new network location in Computer
NOTE: During installation, please use a drive letter towards the end of the alphabet.

3. Double click the new entry and you can set up SkyDrive

4. As we're using SkyDrive, pick that from the drop down list and name your drive.

5. Create a safe card for login, use your Windows Live credentials

6. Choose whether you want the directory to open when finish and click on finish,

7. Once it's finished you'll see SkyDrive's directory in Windows Explorer is the same in web-based SkyDrive.

You can now drag & drop items up to 50MB into the folders and it'll upload instantly to SkyDrive.
Next, we're going to add the folders to the 'send to' context menu.

8. Open an explorer windows and in the address bar type;
shell:sendto

You'll see all the entries to the send to context menu here.

9. Open another explorer windows and navigate to your SkyDrive folder. For example, i'm going to use my Pictures folder. Right click and drag the folder you want in the send to context menu to create a shortcut.

You can rename the new shortcut if you want.
Now, when you want to send some files to SkyDrive, right click the item, go to send to and then choose your new entry.

The good news is on the Gladinet could Desktop program itself. I was wondering how to see files and folders of different sizes transferred from the hard drive onto the 7 installation on the Virtual Box where this is no direct access to internal until trying this one out! Good Catch!

hello, quick question....

once I drop files onto the virtual drive for uploading to skydrive, does it occupy space in my physical drive?

No doubt a temporary file will be used whilst uploading. Once uploaded i've not noticed anything on my PC. It goes straight to SkyDrive.

Not sure why the capacity of the Gladinet drive stays consistent with my OS drive though

I think it does occupy space on your physical drive.

I up'd 1.23GB (music) last night onto SkyDrive through Gladinet. It didn't leave 1.23GB anywhere on my hard drive that's for sure. Are you sure that doesn't mean program files taking up too much space

What you are seeing is a virtual drive representing the folder on the live.com server itself. The icons seen represent the files being uploaded using only a few killobytes at the most depending on how much is being uploaded onto the server.

This works for a 7 or other installation on the SUN Virtual Box but won't on the XP mode or 7 installed onto a vhd there it seems. For the XP mode that's a simple direct transfers since the RC now has full access to usb flash drives as well as your internal drives while any custom install of Vista or 7 on a vhd is limited to an rw disk in the dvd drive used.
