John a hard drive and a SSD are two completely different things.
Because a nooby might not know that I updated my post and gave a warning.

What else do you suggest besides the warning not to defrag an SSD?

Because I read so my of the threads you are helping in I do notice a lot of the problem people have is they somehow miss this in your tutorial. Could you put it in a little colored box so maybe they won't miss it.

Quote:
Unplug all other HD's and peripherals except ethernet cable to increase chances of it starting up connected.
It might be helpful also a short explanation about installing data from old system to the new install if they are not sure the things they backed up are clean of infections.
They could end up contaminating the clean install.

Here is one your not going to like.

Leave out the Sleep/Hibernate in the tutorial.

Let them get things working as they should and then tackle the Sleep/Hibernation as a separate thing after running the clean install for a few days.
My reasoning for this is; if by a slim chance they have problems with Sleep/Hibernation several days after the clean install you or anybody else helping with the problem will know the clean install went like it should and worked for several days so the problem most likely is just with the Sleep/Hibernation.

I put my cup back on.

Thanks Jack. I put the ethernet cable advice in Jack Black to grab attention, added suggestion to scan data first with MBAM before reimporting.

I'll need to think about the Sleep/Hibernate advice because I've never seen it cause any problems on any of my installs and those who adopt it all like it a lot - except for those who don't ever turn off the PC. It maybe can be reworded as more of a suggestion to test it first.

Greg I am having problems posting in the forum namely I type a long or short post only to have it disappear when I correct it or am just about to post.
I have tried all manner of ways to fix it (including sfc and chkdsk /f /r) it but to no avail.
I have several images via Macrium and my concern is that I shall lose data if I attempt to load my data and programs back into the new install it is going to lose all my login passwords.

Bill first thing I'd do is try another browser, even if you have to install it for that purpose. Macrium is good.

Let's also keep this thread about reinstalling Factory OEM only, not reimaging or other issues. The best ways to get help here is to start a new thread in General with the best title you can come up with to describe your issue succinctly

In step 12, the Secunia online inspector has been discontinued for a while now, you could get rid of that part.

Thanks Derek It does appear they jettisoned their consumer version and are now about enterprise.

Really appreciate the heads up on these. Please let me know anything else you notice. Right now it still seems it can use some paring.

You're welcome,

Yeah, we had a tutorial that Colin made but had to dump it, I think he's going to try updating it for the installed version.

Yeah, I don't know where to start paring unless you wanted to split it off into two, focusing the other half on post install, Maybe step 8, at the program installs. Just a thought though.

That could give you some room for some screenshots if you still want, pictures speak volumes.

Another thing I noticed you may want to move to the top or restate at the top in step 14, about imaging before hand in case they do need to ship it back,

that may end up being one of those items that doesn't get seen until it's too late.
