Sorry but no. It only turns search on or off. You could use the tutorial below though if you wanted to reset the search options back to default.

I just tried turning off windows search. GTX11 one of the reasons an individual might want to remove windows search (as in my case) is if you are using google desktop. Google desktop only indexes files when your computer is at idle, sadly though windows search does the same thing. And windows search has a higher priority for indexing files than that of google desktop so I wanted to turn it off in order to allow google desktop to index my files. However after doing what was mentionned in this forum my computer won't restart anymore and system restore can't fix the problem either. It's a real shame

After doing specifically what in the forum that caused your computer to not restart anymore?
simply turning off windows search. I know its sounds really silly, but that's all I did, there were no other programs running at the time of doing so, so I eliminated that from the equation. Perhaps this is only a fluke, however I felt it was important to give feedback in case this happens to someone else. Like I said, my case is somewhat different in that I wanted to turn windows search off rather than on. I hope this doesnt happen to anyone else, anyways not a bother anymore I re-installed last night and should have everything back up and running in not too long.
I should specify that after you uncheck windows search, you are required to restart your computer. It was at this point that the computer would not do so. I would arrive at the "Windows is loading" screen which is right before the log on screen and the computer would basically stay at that screen. As i've said system restore didnt fix the issue either. Brink your concern is highly appreciated, I just hope this is something that others don't encounter.

I must admit that this is the first time I have seen this happen for this, but thank you for posting and sharing your results Missionman. I'm not sure why it would have caused this for you.
I followed this guide and managed to turn the search feature off but then I wanted to turn it on again, just to be able to make one search, "Windows Search” is not in the list of Services anymore. Is there a way to get it back?

Did you check Windows Search in Windows Features (not services) and restart the computer first?

Is there any way to turn off search for the Start menu, which severely restricts the size of the start menu and makes it totally useless, without turning off search in other places, where it can sometimes be passably useful?

Sorry, but it's a all or none setting.
You could change the number of programs to display in the Start Menu to also change how large the Start Menu can get if that may help.

Thanks Brink. I sort of expected that answer, but I thought I should ask it, in case there was a solution.
The increase to 30 "recent programs" makes the Start Menu big enough to show 50+ entries from All Programs, when that is selected. Making the Start Menu almost useful, since that is about ⅔ of what I have on All Programs... one scroll click will show the rest, instead of 4. So that is helpful.
I have used Tweaker's Taskbar Always on Top Taskbar Always On Top - Disable or Enable - Windows 7 Forums and http://freelaunchbar.com to mostly replace the functionality I expected from the Start Menu, but on the few occasions I need to refer to it, having it bigger will be good. Sad that M$ takes away features.
