I guess I didn't describe myself better, sorry.

My problem was that the default program to run the REG file was set too notepad, and I couldn't figure out how to change it. However, I did figure it out. It works great!

My other question was not related to going back after your tweak. What if one wanted to go back to the time when they 1st loaded Windows 7? I know about system restore of course. What would happen if you saved your Reg file the moment you installed Windows 7, updates, etc. Then 3 months later went back to the original registry file? How would that play out.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I've tweaked these settings since XP. So let's say I would do an original registry reload to my 6 year old XP install, what would happen? Well, you would just go back to original system settings. These tweaks change factory default settings which are almost never changed through the lifespan of the OS. But if it were to be the case ( a reg update were made to a tweak by Microsoft), you would go back to the original system settings when clicking your old registry key and windows update would detect an update after scannin the OS and change it to it's newest setting. But I doubt that very much.

Hope that helps you understand.

Yes it does, thanks. You know how a computer can get after a year or so, with alot of crap files, settings etc over time. Instead of doing a clean reinstall I was wondering how that registry save would work. That's all. I don't try to tweak to much in the registry, so that's why I don't know alot about it.

BTW, I have done this exact tweak on 3 computers, all running Windows 7 Ultimate and it worked fine. This morning I tried it on a Pro version and it would never do anything. This is supposed to work on all versions right?

Yes it should. The code is the same for all flavors of Windows.

Hi Brian,

No it will not. This will speed up shutdown and reaction to open folders.

If you want to speed up boot time,

Open Command prompt with Administrator privilidges and type this command

Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll, ProcessIdleTasks

Press Enter.

You might want to check what programs start at boot in MSconfig and disable what doesn't need to startup with Windows.

Brian,

You won't actually see anything happen. It will just start boot defrag and other options that usually run when system is idle. You will see cpu activity increase. The command must be run with admin privilidges.

Hi,

I followed instructions to the letter, and saved back up registry.reg file. After a reboot I was unable to go online via a mobile dongle at first, as usage details had been disturbed.

I tried to restore the saved reg file (184 mb!) and was given the message "Cannot import..registry.reg. Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

I am unsure if the saved reg file has been restored, and the tweak reg files overwritten. Can you please shine some light on what has happened? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

This tweak will in no way affect a mobile dongle. We must not iterpret misshaps with a tweak.

You can actually read a reg tweak eith a right click and edit. It will tell you what will change.

As for the import of the registry, try to boot in safe mode to restore. In general, even if all keys aren't restored they are the same as befor you tweaked, except the tweak will be restored to original settings.
