Windows 7 - how to partition hp laptop

Hi Shawn,

Hope you are doing well.
This is my first post in seven forums.
I have got a new HP lap top which has 4 primary partition , when i tried to creat the 5th one it popped me up the window which you shown in method 1 step 10

"The operation selected will convert the disk to dynamic... are you sure you want to continue?"
Thank God i did not clicked "Yes"
When going through your posts i came across that the work around will be creating a extended/logical partition. But no where i found out the steps to do that.
Do you have clear steps or video on how to do that. so that i can do it with the help of that.
Tons of thanks in advance.

What is the difference between primary partition, extended partition, logical drives and volume? Quite a basic question I know but I'm new to this and all the new info is getting my head fuzzy

I recently cleaned my 1TB HDD and did a clean install on win 7 to a 100GB partition. Now I'm left with 831,51GB of unallocated space. I'm planning to use all of that as one storage. What would be the best way to do it and does it require setting the size manually or is there a command in diskpart through which I can simply get it all to use?

Hello Lasse,

Could you post a screenshot of your Disk Management screen showing all of your HDD layout? This will allow us to help better.

The links below can help give more details about the different types of partitions. Most likely, you would be creating a new primary partition with the unallocated space left on the drive to the right of your 100GB primary partition.Hope this helps for now,

Shawn

Hello.

I have an HP laptop with 4 primary partitions.
I'd like to create a new partition to keep files and folders, leaving C with the OS and programs.
My idea is to create a fifth extended partition along the primary ones (I don't want to delete any of them).
Is it possible without messing something up?

Regards.

EDIT I found the answer some posts above. Thanks.

Hello Montmorency, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm glad that you found the answer you needed.

Just to make sure, and for others reading, you could use METHOD TWO in the tutorial below to shrink your C: drive to unallocated space by how much you want for the new partition, then create a new logical partition with the unallocated space.

Hello. I have a problem with creating a new partition. I shrinkaged my system partition using Disk Management and everything went well, I got unallocated partition. Now I want to create a new partition out of my unallocated. I do exactly the same as you wrote on forums, but after clicking "no" when the question about changing the selected disks from basic to dynamic appears, the whole process stops, as I did nothing. Why I can't create a new partition? What should I do? Please help.

Hello Ania, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like you already have 4 primary partitions, and will need to use the tutorial below to create a new logical partition from the shrunk space instead.

Hope this helps,
