I agree Wolfgang. What has me stumped in that screenshot is how the first partition on that disk is a primary partition and the other 3 are dynamic on the same physical hard drive.

I don't see a dynamic - where is it. A dynamic partition would show green, the light blue one is a simple partition.
Your XP installation problem may be a missing Sata driver problem.

    Hello WHS,

He had dynamic partitions in his previous screenshot before this change, but I think he had just gotten logical and dynamic mixed up in the one above. :)

OK, I see. The previous screenshot was weird anyhow. He must have converted the 3 to dynamic himself.

Yeah, I'm still not sure how he had one primary and 3 dynamic partitions/volumes on the same physical disk.

Finally moved an unmovable file but new problem came up

After several weeks of trying, following the instructions/advice found here, I had been unable to accomplish shrinking my C volume after several weeks of frustration with PerfectDisk.

Following a suggestion in another forum I by used the freeware MyDefrag and it was able to move files that Perfect Disk couldn't and shrink C by 6 GB

I hope that I will be able to shrink C more, but now I have encountered a new problem!

When I shrunk my C volume using Windows 7 (after using MyDefrag) it created a 6GB unallocated “black” partition to the right of the C partition, and to the left of my logical “blue” D partition.
When I tried to extend my logical blue D partition by right clicking the logical D partition the “extend volume” option is greyed out.
Is there a way I could get around this to add the unallocated 6GB to the blue logical D partition??
    Thanks for your help!!

Partition Wizard can do that. Windows cannot do it if the free space is to the left. But is D your factory recovery partition. If yes, I do not understand why you would want to increase the size.

    to clarify...

"C" is the original drive from which I created the logical partition "F" after using your advice. Now I am trying to combine the Unallocated space with the F logical partition

What would happen if I deleted the F partition (I have it backed up)??

Would I then get a larger unallocated partition comprising of the space on F
    plus the 6gb "unallocated" space??

If so could this new unallocated partition be made into a new "F" partition??

Thank you guys you have been very helpful!
