Windows 7: Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk

20 Aug 2013   #140

64-bit Windows 10 Pro

You never had an issue with the other programs because those programs are more advanced, and Disk Management is for basic functions only.

A Basic MBR disk is only allowed up to 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition with up to 128 logical volumes in the extended partition.

When you try to create more than 4 primary partitions or create a primary partition in split partitions on a disk, then this is where the issue is. The 3rd party programs automatically use an advanced trick with a hidden created partition/volume to be able to do it. However, since Disk Management is only basic, it must convert the disk to be dynamic (not good for an OS drive) to be able to do this.

Of course, you need to know more about the ins and outs of disk management and partitions to know all of this before hand, but at least it does warn you first.

Thank you very much for this, Brink. I tried various methods to get rid of the dynamic partitions using Diskpart and advice from MS Technet . But your solution using Partition Wizard on a bootable USB was so simple and easy .

Thank you very much.

Option 2 Update Info

Now when you try to download "EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition", you get "EasyUS Partition Manager Free Edition". It does not have the option to do the dynamic to basic disk conversion.

Hello Neu, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you able to select to boot to Windows normally?

If you are in Windows now, does that happen everytime you restart?

Thanks Brink...

Nope I am not able to enter into windows .
First time when it asked me to restart , I clicked on restart and then after dell logo (where F2 and F12 options are available)
window , a new window comes with the cursor blinking. Initially I thought it is a part of the process but it is in same state even after 3 hours.

In that case, you might go through the troubleshooting steps in the tutorial below to see if it may help for now.

Hiii Brink .

Sorry for the late reply.

I tried troubleshooting windows. But I was unable to scan using the malwarebyte bootable cd. So I used windows 7 installation disk to go to previous restore points(Unfortunately , I didn't had one).

So i tried command prompt to see if drives are still there or not. I found that all drives were there and tried to explore system32 folder. everything was alright.

Then I ran the system repair(which was silly Idea), and after that I again ran the command prompt but this time there was no C: at all . I explored for D: and this was also missing. Although E: was still there.

Then I went to find what happened to those drives using windows installation CD(where i chose to install windows) and I figured out that the C: and D: were merged to show an unallocated drive.

Then I downloaded partition wizard and tried running it on bootable USB. I ran surface test.Everything was fine with that test. then I opened partition recovery wizard and found that files were there and there status was LOST/DAMAGED(except D:/),even system reserved was lost/damaged. when I selected these files to recover most of the files were overlapping , and this time I did a blunder,I thought recovering them in parts may solve the problem of overlapping So i chose only few of them to be recovered .

After then I researched and downloaded Hieren's CD . which helped me to get those drives which I couldn't recover using partition Wizard.

I had files which were labled as BOOT so i kept all those and few of data files. Now the problem is that I had dual booted my laptop last year(with windows 7 and windows 8 developers preview). After recovering files using Hieren's tool I was booted to windows 8 developer preview. Can I get my old OS back??

Sorry for the Long Story
