    I always have index disabled, and can't get at these settings without turning it on first. So here's my work around if anyone is interested.

    I've added the string "PerceivedType" with a value of "text" to any file types I want to search inside (with index off), this will direct windows to actually search inside these file types.
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.php]
    "PerceivedType"="text"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.whatever]
    "PerceivedType"="text"
    Hope this is helpful to some!

    I for one wish there was a better system for search settings, a more visable quick access button (beside the search field would seem obvious) for controlling various advanced settings without the need to access the indexing feature to enable them in the first place. I'll keep hoping!

    All of my code snippets, tips and tricks, history etc are in about 4,500 TXT files (15 years of collecting)
    As you know WinXP contents could be searched, but MS dumped contents find with Win7.
    Windows 7 "Indexing" slowed my laptop to snails pace too.

    I use a commercial third party app FileSearchEX by Goff Concepts.
    - finds files and/or contents
    - UI is very similar to WinXP Find dlalog
    - install adds a shortcut to WinExp context menu
    - can have multiple searches open at same time
    - was/is worth every cent of the private use fee $15 per household
