One thing I did find some time back in between having the Windows 9 Customer Preview on the second OS drive and the interim before 10 arrived was seeing a temp install of the Debian edition on the first 100gb there having split the drive up. Once the distro saw the custom install everything became full screen while only ending up mirroring things over to the second lcd here. A regular installation will always see full screen usage.

That unfortunately isn't the case when running any vm player or even the Hyper-V feature on the newer versions since the host OS is still in charge of what is displayed as well as even DOSBox only seeing a window to work through. This is common place with any type of emulation process or virtual environment since it doesn't have control over the physical display itself.

The VM tools themselves are still needed to get things working on the OS in the VM itself there. That allows the OS there to start sharing requests with the host OS for sharing resources. Yet there is a full screen option with the older VM workstation as the support information indicates a button for the full screen mode being present. https://www.vmware.com/support/ws4/d...screen_ws.html

When looking into this even further I ran across another reference that applies to the Hyper-V feature seen in 8, 8.1, and 10. Switching a VM to Full Screen

Generally not running one in full screen mode as well as whenever each VM option is run you will see a window open by default. Just like with any other program. With the Hyper-V feature the Ctrl-Alt-Break(or Pause button) is the key combination for that.

UPDATE: Ok now that the biz about screen resolutions not being the means to see a VM run full screen here's a few more screen to show how things look as described earlier. I was finally able to reboot into the 7 side in order to run the Workstation 12 Player for grabbing the screens here. First have a look at the green arrows in the first one that shows the two items of interest that aare self explanatory.

The next one shows how it looks when not having the VM program's window maximized but click and drag was was used to grow the screen as large as possible without filling the entire screen to have access to other things.

And the last here shows what happens when the full screen mode button pointed to in the first is clicked on where you then see the full screen taken up but still have a borderless boundry on all four sides. of the guest OS being run which is what you were looking for.

You will notice that the Workstation 12 Player's menu bar is still being displayed while the rest has been hidden to allow for full screen viewing of the guest OS. And the background is a little different on the VM there while still being the 17.2 LMDE release.

The other link for Workstation wouldn't even have been come across since prior to the Workstation 12 Player you would have been running the last VM Player 7.2 that came out on June 15th a month before the launch of W10 which will still run on the latest version. 12 came out in late September aimed at 10 primarily while still able to run on Vista as well as 7.

I had actually forgotten about the full screen mode since I typically run with the view seen in the second screen where you can see how it goes over the top of the sidebar gadget they came out with for 8 but also works on 7 as well as 10! I can bounce the VM from monitor to monitor using the move button when in windowed mode when needing to get at something else on the secondary and why I tend to keep them windowed.

But all that of course is to make viewing a VM a lot easier while it won't help any for a live data recovery stick there but as a guest OS only. Or one further step in that area of course is to see a full custom install of the distro onto a VFat primary on the flash drive itself. That is where you then have full access to physical drives since you are running from the flash drive not the host machine's own OS drive.

Hmm well Night Hawk I thought Linux was going to be reasonably easy to use in either form VM or installed but I am damned if I can get anything to install ie Libre Office as I cannot find any info on how to install it I keep getting referred to some archiving stuff and I am thinking of going to Ubuntu as perhaps Mint isn't so good after all - I cannot even open up the SSD in the machine to see what is on it.

Te only thing that works is Thunderbird and Fire fox.

The other thing tat is becoming very irritating id leave it for more than two minutes and I have to login again and again

Don't you just love it! "They saw ya comin' and git ya good!" There are some things that simply can be real annoyances seen with the other OS there without any doubt!

The session ending fast is generally the power savings type setting where the display or drive(s) are put to sleep after so many minutes. In Windows you would simply create a custom power plan and change and save the advanced settings to how you want things and never worry about it again. With distros like LM as well as ubuntu when seeing a full install you have to plan on going over these types of settings as well.

Now that is for any full install to a regular internal drive or VM even you plan to be running a long time. As for a data recovery stick you can still see the full custom install take place but wnen used will be busying trying to back things up from a drive before seeing it wiped or replaced if on the way where you are kept busy. The rest of the time the flash drive will simply be in a holder or on a key chain for some.

John, all Linux operating systems work the same way - installing things on Ubuntu is done the same way/similar to LinuxMint. This is why it is crucial to learn the command line tools, as per the guide I posted earlier. Some software can be accessed from the software repository, but not all of it. If you are struggling with LinuxMint, it won't be much easier in Ubuntu, or any other Linux distribution for that matter.

The difference between Linux Mint and ubuntu is almost Nil unless you get into the Linux Mint with Debian base alternative. Linux Mint uses the ubuntu base and features more apps then the LM Debian Edition.

As far as simply running different programs one thing commonly seen between distros would be the Wine app which acts much like DOSBox or any other emulator as far as running another OS's programs in an isolated from host OS type of environment. I think he would likely find that to be much easier then the hesitance to the command line and Bash commands as many are.

Office should already be installed
All you'd have to install is microsoft fonts pack which is pretty easy
Just open software manager and type in the search box
microsoft
And the font package will appear in the search results.
