Linux Mint while seeing the two choices for the base being ubuntu or Debian is still about the easiest updated distro to work with having Windows users in mind when it was first seen. But the question for anything live as far as for the purpose of the guide here isn't about which programs will go on but how to use a distro for live data recovery since this thread has gone way off track.

For that there are two options being the first most commonly seen write to flash drive or burn to dvd as far as running the distro strictly live or the custom install to a flash drive which you still boot live from but can install and run various programs on where the situation may require it.

Actually about the first distro even blogged about as far as live data recovery was the Debian release of Knoppix Live for CD before that one grew in size to become Live for DVD. With Portable VBox it was possible to see Knoppix installed to a flash drive while that is one without any installer of it's own.

Look thanks to you all so much I am now getting a bit of a handle on it I think mainly because things like taskbar etc are not taskbar etc and the Mint forum folks are really helpful too.

For example I found that most printers have preinstalled drivers when was trying to install the HP I have so really apart from being super quick. Plus I had a problem with the broadband dropping out but just by chance found a right click on the network and disabling and then re enabling it got it back again without having to reboot like I was doing.

So as soon as I have the basic stuff up and running Colin I shall get into those terminal commands.

I have just installed Mint Mate 17.3 Cinnamon on a usb stick.
It's just to slow on usb 3.0. It also play trick with my wireless mouse (usb dongle) at times.
I have spent hours and hours trying to figure out how I can install it on a HotSwap ssd.

What is the secret. I can't or don't know how to make my ssd to fat 32.
Is their a NTSF Mint Mate I could install?

I didn't have to do anything special to my crucial mx100 256gb ssd to get 17.1 on it :/
Besides using this to get it on the flash drive otherwise the install went fine to the ssd without formatting it the installer did the formatting ?

I don't know how ssd's come out of the package formatted but I did nothing to it except take it out and install it and boot the flash media... :/

I've also in the past installed 17.1 along side win-7 so I know ntfs means little :/

The SSDs come unformatted from the factory. But they get automatically formatted if you install an OS.
