I am glad you were able to get it done. And don't worry about the reps. I see that you like it and that is all what counts.

Here is a new one along the same lines but with a different focus. I just posted it a couple of hours ago.

I think it would be a good idea to post a link to the 32bit version of Mate as not everyone has a 64bit machine.

This is the link I found: Linux Mint 14 "Nadia" - MATE (32-bit) - Linux Mint

The link you currently have is for this: Linux Mint 14 "Nadia" - MATE (64-bit) - Linux Mint

That is OK although I think that PCs that have no 64bit capability must be rare these days. But thank you anyhow.

I had 4 of them this week to work on, all XP 32 bit. I used Mint Mate on two of them.

New machine will be 64 bit but older ones that many of us work on will be 32 bit.

You will need a dedicated drive for Mint. You cannot mix it with existing files. But you can store files in the Mint file system. However, ideally you should have a seperate external device - preferably an external disk because of capacity.

The installation of Mint on the USB stick will be completely independent from the OS you have installed. It does not matter whether your base OS is 32 or 64bit. But in order to run it you need a 64bit capable PC - which all recent PCs are.

Alternatively you can download a 32bit Mint Mate from here: http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=133

I recommend you download from the James Madison University site. That has proven to be the most complete and reliable.

Thanks for this.
I'm trying to recover data from a failed laptop hard-drive, mounted in a portable drive reader.
With this I am able to mount the drive, but it does not see any files or directories on it.
I don't know yet if creating an image of it to another drive will be of any use or not? Or if there is something else I can try from within mint.

If you cannot access any files or folders, the MFT (master file table) may be damaged. In that case an image will not help.

Here is a list of recovery programs I would try. The first one (Recuva) has proven to be very useful in the past.
