How to Create, Delete and Modify User Accounts in Windows 7

information   Information
This will show you how to create, delete, and modify user accounts in Windows 7.

To invoke the main User Accounts dialogue, follow one of the methods below:
  1. Click the Start Orb and type User Accounts into the search box and press enter/return.
  2. Click the Start Orb and then click Control Panel followed by User Accounts and Family Safety and finally User Accounts.
Either method will bring up the following dialogue panel (note that all user names have been removed for privacy reasons).

This shows the dialogue panel after you have just installed Windows 7. As you can see, there is only one account there and it is an Administrator account. It is also Password Protected, as recommended during installation.

OPTION ONE

TO CREATE A USER ACCOUNT
1) Click on Manage another account. This brings up the following dialogue. Note that there are two accounts shown here - the Administrator account and the Guest account which is disabled by default.

2) Click on Create a new account to bring up the following dialogue.

3) Type in the required name for the account and select the required account type (note that it is recommended that only Standard user accounts are created) and then click on Create Account to bring up the following dialogue.

OPTION THREE

TO DELETE A USER ACCOUNT

NOTE: You cannot delete the user account that you are logged on with. You can only delete another user account if you are logged in as an administrator.
1) Click on the name of the account that you wish to delete. This brings up the following dialogue.

2) Make the decision as to whether or not you wish to preserve the user's files, and then click on Delete Files or Keep Files as appropriate.
NOTE: If you choose to keep the files, they will be saved in a folder on the desktop.

3) Click on Delete Account.

Deleted User Accounts

Can I set up a user account with the same name as one previously deleted?
I tried this and found out that Windows 7 shows the name correctly in the user inlogscreen but in the User folder adds the computer name to distinguish from the previous name.

PLEASE HELP! User Files Still Show Under Computer

I just purchased a used laptop and one of the User Accounts Name was "robin." I only know because when I opened Computer, then C drive, and clicked on Users...it showed a folder titled "robin" with a padlock on it. It won;t let me just click on it and delete. I've tried deleting through User Accounts in the Control Panel, but the only two users listed are Admin and Guest. Can anyone please help me figure out how to delete the Users completely where their folders do not show up in Computer? Thank you!

Hello Jenny, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you are not already, you will need to be logged in a different administrator account than the one that you are wanting to delete.

After the above, see if you may be able to delete the user account normally with OPTION THREE in the tutorial.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn
