I have spent much of the past 24 hours trying to get this thing to work, including about 5 hours with two separate Microsoft tech support guys in India (useless!).
The initial download worked: I got the three files (the two setup boxes and the
Win7...64 unloader. I have run the the unloader countless times on three different WinXP machines, but each time I get the "
We are unable to create or save new files..." error. This happens irrespective of whether the files are on the desktop or in another folder. When I check the properties, the folder invariably comes up with the read-only check box solid green. I uncheck it and close the properties dialog, but when I reopen it, the darn check box is green again!
Now I know the first step in this tutorial says I should "unblock" each file before running the unloader, but this option does not show up when I bring up the properties. I assume "unblocking" is something specific to Vista. Right?
So anyway, I do get the setup folder created (despite the error), but when I dblclk the setup.exe I am told that it can't run because it is a 64-bit program and I'm in 32-bit WinXP. OK, no need to panic, right? After all, that is why this tutorial has been created.
I downloaded the oscdimg.exe and put it in C:\Windows\system32. I moved the expandedSetup folder into the root directory (C), fired up cmd, CD\ to have the prompt at C: and pasted in the following string
bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD C:\expandedSetup C:\Windows7.iso
Upon hitting ENTER, DOS tells me that
The file name, directory name, or Volume label syntax is incorrect.
Now what?!
I know $30 is not much, but wasting all this time on something that should have taken no more than an hour is unforgivable!
