You might be using a product key that doesn't match the version of Windows 7 that came preinstalled on your computer. Check the product key to make sure it is for the version that you are trying to activate. You can't use a product key for Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) to activate a copy of Windows 7 without SP1.
It wasn't pre installed, it is a Windows 7 OEM disc, I bought all the components, and built the PC myself, then installed Windows 7 from the disc. It isn't a PC manufacturer disc like a Dell one or something it is an official Windows 7 OEM disc but I understand what you're saying and that this applies to my disc.
Still a pretty stupid way to do things by MS but what's new, I can't see what the big deal is authenticating after you have installed SP1 and SP1 should warn you of this or check before performing the upgrade. Anyway its all solved now I found that info buried on the MS site after the Authentication failed the first time.
