Repair Install

Success!!! In case this helps others, here's the steps I took to recover:

    1. Borrowed a friends drive reader and backed up the personal files on my hard drive
    2. Ran check disk on my hard drive with auto repair (found some bad clusters which probably took out some OS files and caused the crash)
    3. Got a copy of the a W7 install disk from a friend and used it as a boot disk. This brought up the option to repair the existing installation (which failed), then the option to do a system restore (which succeeded).

I haven't been through every file and program to be sure it all works, but it was great joy when I saw my desktop reappear and so far everything has been working fine. My next step is to create a back-up to my back-up (in case it crashes during back-up again) and to create a disk image as well. Many thanks for the help and moral support I found here. I'll definitely come back looking for answers in the future.

Thanks for the info. If I recall correctly when I did a repair install before there was Win 7 SP1, repairing windows will result in having to reinstall many applications. Is that still the case? If so, then you might as well do a full clean install then?

No reinstall of any application is needed! Did you read the tutorial?

    Hello Sammy,

Usually your installed applications will not be affected. If you have any that may be, it will be mentioned at step 12. :)

Thanks, is that something new though where applications usually did not have to be reinstalled after the repair? I had about almost a dozen or so applications that needed it with Windows 7 repair a few years ago.

I ended up going back to an Acronis disk image of Windows 7 I had on hand that had most of the applications installed rather than installing the applications again one by one. In other words, my experience was not what the tutorial describes and consequently I am debating whether or not to try the repair, or to do a fresh install. I suspect my Acronis disk image may have some issues with it so I don't think I should use that.

    Sammy,

No, it's pretty much always been that applications were not affected by a repair install. The ones that may have issues are AV, security, or some utility type programs.

Thanks Brink. For me I hadn't had issue with AV programs and most utilities. Rather Video Photo Editing, Office type programs, navigation programs. All apps that take a long time to install and resource heavy.

Looks like for me repairing isn't an option. Sucks to be me, lol.

iTunes and Repair Install won't work

I tried to do a repair install on a friends PC moments ago. The repair was halted during the compatibility check because Windows won't do it's thing when iTunes and Magic iSO are installed.

I think this is a big omission. One can't help wonder what else is vital but missing?

It would be helpful to all to edit the first post that you cannot do a repair or upgrade with iTunes installed. Lots of people including my friend have an Apple product and a colossal library that is hundreds of GBs or more in size. Unless they have an external drive or another drive, they have no way of doing the repair because they can't backup their iTunes.

    Hello Sammy,

Sorry, but I cannot add that to the tutorial since individual programs like iTunes will constantly have updates that may or may not allow compatibility to do a repair install. It would be impossible to keep up with.

Hi. I want to ask about this warning:

"You must have at least 8.87 GB + what is currently being used of free space, more if you have a larger installation, on the hard drive/partition Windows 7 is installed on to do a repair install."

Does this mean that I need some 40 GB free space on my system partition? Because my Windows folder is more than 30 GB.
