Possible Catch-22

I am using the Repair Install hopefully to fix a computer that runs fine except will not connect to the internet. I see where it says "The computer must remain connected to the internet for the entire installation" - Is that only if you choose to download installation updates as suggested in Step 9 ? I really do not want to reinstall from scratch unless it's necessary. . .

Hello Zomalaja, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That's correct. You do not need to have an internet connection to do a repair install unless you choose to install the updates.

I just did the repair install but I don't see the Windows.old folder, even after unhiding files. Should I be seeing it?

Hello Badwolf,

Double check to see if it may show up Disk Cleanup. If it doesn't, then are you sure that you didn't do a custom install for a clean install instead by mistake?

Would this upgrade-install accept my product key? It's not a retail product key, but an upgrade-key I bought (XP->W7).

I remember that fresh installs didn't work in the past (I would have had to install XP, then upgrade using the key), but since this is an "upgrade install" I wonder if it'll suffice?

Hello Buff, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, it will since this basically just an in-place upgrade to the same edition.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Hi, I'm trying to run a repair install, but after checking the compatibility I keep getting the messages:

''You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows''
and
''32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows''

I know for a fact that my windows is x64 and I'm selecting x64 when running the repair install, anyone know what the issue is?

Hello Lewis, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you are using some sort of custom installation media that includes both 32-bit and 64-bit versions on it, then that would be the issue. The installation media can only be either or to be able to use it for a repair install.
