Hello Alex,

No, you will not need to reinstall any of your programs. They will be carried over to the new upgraded installation. Sometimes you may need to reinstall a driver though, but you can see more details on this in the yello TIP box at the top of the tutorial to better help.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

That's great man. It worked perfectly. Thank you so much.

I have a question about it. Could we use this instead of clean install all the time? Are there a downsides or disadvantages of this?

You're most welcome Tyler.

A repair install is only meant as a last effort to repair your current Windows 7 installation. It is not a substitute for a clean install if you wanted to start with a fresh clean formated installation.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm too hot and bothered to read through the whole post. I have a partition on my disk which is called "recovery" and which contains a folder called "recovery" (wow) which I cannot open. On trying, I get a message from HP saying "this area of the hard disc... contains files used for a system recovery". I'm assuming this is for a clean or repair install? I think I may have created something of the sort in the early days, but I can't remember. Amnesia seems to run in my family.

And if so, how do I run a repair (or clean install) from the disc, since I can't open it? *bangs head on screen*

Additional: I'm going to try to revert to a system restore point, but I doubt it'll work. Pessimism also runs in my family.

Did you not make the Recovery DVD's when you first startup for the first time.

oops!!! - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
No, I didn't make any. Yes, I'm an idiot.

Thanks for that link - I didn't know you could do that without bringing in the guarantee (which I've... misplaced; we already established that I'm an idiot).
