It sounds like that may be the cause of it being canceled. Try uninstalling you ATI and sound drivers, then doing the repair install to see if it may finish then.
another update:

somehow Windows Media Player got corrupted (probably me fiddling with settings or something) so i thought i would try the install/repair again, this time removed any conflicts before i did the install (ATI drivers and Symantec Network Drivers) then tried the repair/Install.

it got a little further this time, but still stopped with the same error (user cancelled) followed by the same old "roll back"

so looks like im stuck with a corrupt Windows Media Player, unless anybody knows a work around for this, or a way to re-install Windows Media Player from the installation disks?

Bluemoon4ever,

You might see if running a sfc /scannow command may be able to fix WMP. If not, try toggling WMP off and on under "Media Features" in Windows Features to see if that may help.

sfc /scannow finds errors but says it cant fix them. Also tried turning on/off windows media player but still doesnt work properly. i can get sound but no pictures. guess i will stick with Media Player Classic until there is an official release of WMP.

managed to do a repair/install today & this is how i did it.

Ran the Upgrade advisor program to se what the conflicts are and removed the following:
Un-Installed all Catalyst Programs, such as Catalyst Install Manager, and Catalyst Control Center.
Upgraded My ATI Redeon X1250 driver to a ATI Radeon x1200 Series (Microsoft WDDM) Driver, which ironically isn't a Microsoft Signatured driver.
removed Symantec Endpoint and installed AVG internet Security.

then i ran the upgrade/install program from my hard disk, then everything went smoothly (apart from 1 instance of the install program telling me that i cant cancel the install, which i never tried to) at around 90% done, after clickin on OK it finished without a problem .... and WIndows Media Player works fine now lol.

dont know what the problem actually was .. maybe it was Catalyst software.

Bluemoon4ever,

I'm not certain either, but security programs have been known to interfere with doing a upgrade installation. I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted.

Hello Auggie,

That is strange. Did you do a clean or upgrade install when you originally installed Windows 7? What build of Windows 7 are you using?

Unless this is a dual boot with XP and Windows 7, then you would need do a clean install using a Windows 7 installation disc instead to format and install with.
