How to Clean up Firefox Settings Changed by Browser Hijacking Attacks

warning   Warning
This is not a tutorial aimed at removing Viruses, Malware or Browser Hijacking software itself. It is simply a tutorial on how to clean up your browser after you have successfully removed the malicious software. ***This is not a sufficient replacement for a complete cleanup*** If you are currently infected, please visit our System Security forum and post your symptoms there so that your issue can be handled in a correct manor

Note   Note
This tutorial is intended to be used by novice-advanced users. If you feel uncomfortable changing any settings, please ask for help from one of our SF pro's

Before getting started:

This tutorial involves changing and/or resetting your Firefox settings. Do not change any settings other than the ones mentioned here or settings you have researched extensively before doing so. Changing some settings may cause unwanted problems. Before proceeding, see the link below and make a backup.

Advanced Browser Cleanup: Firefox

1. Open Firefox and click on the Navigation Bar. Type about:config and then press Enter

(Disregard the warning about voiding a warranty. There is no warranty)

Resetting Browser settings hijacked by malicious software or apps

(For the purpose of this Tutorial, we will use Conduit)

1. Search "Conduit"

2. Any results that show up, right click each instance and Select "Reset"

Typical hijack programs are (but not limited to) Conduit, Trovi, snap.do, babylon and many others.

(Default is about:blank)

When your Default Search Engine is hijacked:

1. Search for "browser.search.defaultenginename"

2.Perform the same steps as above to Reset or Modify your default browser

When your Default Homepage is hijacked:

1. Search for "browser.startup.homepage;"

2. Perform the same steps as above to Reset or Modify your default browser

When Toolbars were added to Firefox:

1. Search "Toolbars"

2. Right click on all entries and click "Reset" (almost all Toolbars are junk)

When a malicious program has changed your settings and redirected you to a Proxy Server:

1. Search "proxy" and Right click on ALL settings in bold and reset them

***If you are in a business setting, please ask your IT department about any Proxy settings that may be valid***
