Windows Movie Maker 6.0 - Install on Windows 7

How to Install Windows Movie Maker 6.0 on Windows 7

   Information
In Windows 7, it is preferred for you to download and install the newer Windows Live Movie Maker. If you would prefer the older Windows Movie Maker 6.0 from Windows Vista instead, then this will show you how to install it over to Windows 7.
   Note
These are the things you are going to need for this tutorial:
  • Windows Movie Maker 6.0 Files from Windows Vista
  • The .cmd file to register Movie Maker DLL's to Windows 7 (Check the attachments)
  • and of course, a PC running Windows 7
   Tip

  • If you did a custom install from Windows Vista, you can find your Movie Maker files from the Windows.old folder. (Thanks to Wii Master 64)

Here's How:
1. First, you must copy Windows Movie Maker 6.0 files from a computer with Vista installed.
Important: If you are going to install WMM on a Windows 7 64-bit, make sure that the WMM files you will use came from a 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

2. Go to "C:\Program Files". Make a folder named "Windows Movie Maker 6.0" then paste the WMM files inside that folder.

3. Click on the Download button below to download and save moviemk_dll_registrar.zip. Extract and run the install moviemk dlls.cmd file with Run as Administrator and follow the instructions.

4. Add a shortcut to Windows Movie Maker on your desktop for easy access.

5. That's it! You're done :D

Also, may I add, if you do a custom install over a Vista installation, you can find the Movie Maker folder in the windows.old folder.

I followed your instructions...copied 'Windows Movie Maker 6.0' from my 'Vista' pc...then I ran your program "install moviemk dlls.cmd" as Administrator. It seemed to work, but when I tried to create a DVD, It said that it would save the program and then run the DVD program, however, it saved it then just deleted what I had in my storyline...no DVD

Do you have any response to my probolem listed above re: Movie Maker 6.0 in windows 7 not being able to
'Publish to:' I haven't yet tried, but can it 'Import from a digital video camera'? When I tried previously, it could not.
I'm not sure, but I think that by registering these dll files, It has an affect on the systems ability to refresh the screen. Every time I add or delete an icon from the desktop (or make any other changes) I have to 'refresh' in order to see the results. Could this have anything to do with the installation of the additional dll files?

Hi,

You need to publish the movie to your computer. That will convert it .wmv. Then you can pick up the file with dvd maker and burn to dvd to make it usable on standalone dvd players.

That is because the Movie Maker project file, .WSMM is not supported on 7. You might find a codec that will allow it.

I am running the 32 bit version of Movie Maker on 7x64. Seems to work just fine.

Copy the MM files into program Files (x86) if you want to do that.

You must have done something wrong. It works perfectly here. Go to the bottom of the page and click where it says Download Now.

There's really no need to install anything, mine runs fine, all I had to do was register 4 dlls in the Movie Maker folder. Just register WMM3AE.dll, WMM2CLIP.dll, WMM2EXT.dll, and WMM2FILT.dll. Mine works fine now, although I never import anything via video camera, I just use SD card.

32 bit Movie Maker works just fine on my 7 x64. Just put it in program files (x86), register the dll's and off you go.

Note - there is no way I know of to publish a movie to dvd direct from MM6 in windows 7.

Publish it to the computer - that will convert it to .wmv, you can then use dvd maker.
