Meifo's instructions should work fine for getting the Windows Mail messages transferred to Outlook and then porting the Outlook PST file to the new Win7 install.

However, I don't believe Outlook 2003/2007 have an EXPORT function for the actual email Accounts. In prior versions email accounts could be exported to IAF files. I suggest you write down your friends email account(s), settings and passwords before doing the migration.

Also, if your friend is interested in using Windows Live Mail for its mobility aspects, the Outlook Connector enables the Outlook to be used as a Windows Live Mail interface.

Export this key. It is your Outlook 2007 Account settings.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook

You cannot "backup" your PST in it's entirety (rules, messages, et al) using the import/export tool. You can, however, accomplish this by copying your PST file(s) when Outlook is CLOSED.

This info may not be pertinent to this thread, I just wanted to share knowledge relevant to MDs post.

    Importing Emails

I successfully imported Windows Mail emails and they appeared as you indicated in the Storage Folders. The Received emails display properly - that is the email listing shows who sent the email to me. However the "Sent" emails, which are in their own separate "Sent" folders (for example "July 2009 Sent"), also shows only who sent the emails, which of course is me in every case.

If I copy emails from the "July 2009 Sent" folder to the "Sent" subfolder within the Storage Folder or the "Sent" subfolder within the Current Folder, the email listing displays (or can display) to whom the email was sent, as I would want it to.

However if I move the "July 2009 Sent" folder as a subfolder of these same existing Sent Folders, again the email listing will not display to whom the emails were sent but only that I sent them.

Is there a way of setting what will be displayed for each folder like there is in almost every other email program I've ever used?

I have searched for a download of Windows Mail 64 bit, but can't find one. I would be very happy with Windows Mail on my new laptop as it was on my prior Vista 32 bit machine.

Hello Paul, and welcome to Seven Forums.

For the best results, it best to only copy the imported emails into your email account's folders and not the imported folders.

Is there a way of setting what will be displayed for each folder like there is in almost every other email program I've ever used?
Do you mean messaged rules? If so, then you can click on Tools (Alt+M), Message Rules, and Mail to create rules for how messages are filtered to your inbox folders.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Columns And Faded Print

I found the "Columns" option under the View menu and it allowed me to set which columns are visible in the email listing once I set the emails to display on 1 line instead of 2 (which was the default).

Is there any problem keeping my email History within the Storage Folder? To backup, I copy emails from the Current Folder to the History Folder - a separate subfolder for each Month and whether Send or Received. I then backup the History Folder to an external hard drive.

While the "To" or "From" person appears in normal print in the email list, the Subject and Date appear in faded print - is there any way to get the entire description of the email to be in normal print?

    Thanks for your response.

    Paul,

That would be find to store and back them up like that.

There's no way to change the faded print that I know of though.

Hello Corry, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Did you export them into a new folder on the desktop first to be able to import them into Windows 7 later?

You might double check to see if you may have made a mistake somewhere during the export and import steps below.

    Hope this helps for now,
