Windows Live Mail - Import Windows Mail Messages

You cannot "backup" your PST in it's entirety (rules, messages, et al) using the import/export tool. You can, however, accomplish this by copying your PST file(s) when Outlook is CLOSED.

This info may not be pertinent to this thread, I just wanted to share knowledge relevant to MDs post.

I successfully imported Windows Mail emails and they appeared as you indicated in the Storage Folders. The Received emails display properly - that is the email listing shows who sent the email to me. However the "Sent" emails, which are in their own separate "Sent" folders (for example "July 2009 Sent"), also shows only who sent the emails, which of course is me in every case.

If I copy emails from the "July 2009 Sent" folder to the "Sent" subfolder within the Storage Folder or the "Sent" subfolder within the Current Folder, the email listing displays (or can display) to whom the email was sent, as I would want it to.

However if I move the "July 2009 Sent" folder as a subfolder of these same existing Sent Folders, again the email listing will not display to whom the emails were sent but only that I sent them.

Is there a way of setting what will be displayed for each folder like there is in almost every other email program I've ever used?

I have searched for a download of Windows Mail 64 bit, but can't find one. I would be very happy with Windows Mail on my new laptop as it was on my prior Vista 32 bit machine.

I found the "Columns" option under the View menu and it allowed me to set which columns are visible in the email listing once I set the emails to display on 1 line instead of 2 (which was the default).

Is there any problem keeping my email History within the Storage Folder? To backup, I copy emails from the Current Folder to the History Folder - a separate subfolder for each Month and whether Send or Received. I then backup the History Folder to an external hard drive.

While the "To" or "From" person appears in normal print in the email list, the Subject and Date appear in faded print - is there any way to get the entire description of the email to be in normal print?

I am trying hard to get Windows mail back on track after installing the ultimate upgrade from Windows 7. Windows mail the programme is working, since i followed your instructions . BUT i cannot import all my old mails. Very frustrating! Can you help? I dont know which folders to look in, every folder i look in there seems to be no recognition from the import-wizzard. Thanks for helping me!
