How to Change the Windows 7 Taskbar to have Open Window Buttons or Icons

This will show you how to change the open window buttons on the Windows 7 new taskbar to either be buttons or icons.

EXAMPLE: New Taskbar Open Windows as Buttons

EXAMPLE: New Taskbar Open Windows as Icons





OPTION ONE

In Taskbar and Start Menu Properties
1. For more on this, see How to Enable or Disable Windows 7 Taskbar Button Grouping.

A) To Have Open Window Icons on the Taskbar
  • Set to Always combine, hide labels.
B) To Have Open Window Buttons on the Taskbar
  • Set to Never combine.




OPTION TWO

Using a REG File Download
1. To Have Open Window Icons on the Taskbar
A) Click on the download button below to download the file below.

download
B) Go to step 3.
2. To Have Open Window Buttons on the Taskbar
A) Click on the download button below to download the file below.
Taskbar_Buttons.reg
download
3. Click on Save, and save the .reg file to the Desktop.

4. Right click on the extracted .reg file and click on Merge.

5. Click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted.

6. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply the changes.

7. When done, you can delete the downloaded files if you like.







OPTION THREE

Manually in Registry Editor
1. Open the Start Menu, then type regedit in the search box and press Enter.

2. In regedit, navigate to the location below. (see screenshot below)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

3. To Have Open Window Icons on the Taskbar
A) In the right pane, right click on TaskbarGlomLevel and click on Modify. (see screenshot above)

B) Type in 0 (number zero) and click on OK. (see screenshot below)

C) The registry will now look like this. (see screenshot below)

D) Go to step 5.
4. To Have Open Window Buttons on the Taskbar
A) In the right pane, right click on TaskbarGlomLevel and click on Modify. (see screenshot above)

B) Type in 1 (number zero) and click on OK. (see screenshot below)

5. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply the changes.

I may be wrong but i believe the 'Buttons' have text & the 'Icons' don't, making them more condensed.
