Windows 7: Log On Screen - Change

Windows 7 Build 7229 x64

Yeah, I figured that if they added in another way to change the image than it would be a good idea to leave the default one alone.

It's always good to look for alternatives though.

What I was finding here on the 7000 builds was the simple rename along with copy + paste of jpeg files one at a time into the new folder you need to create would immediately see that applied after a full restart. The use of paint was seeing problems with the image reduced to one corner of the screen leaving 3/4s blank white. The direct overwrite or first delete then replace option of seeing the renamed jpg files seems to work each time

That's where I found that simply taking any jpg image and renaming it to "backgroundDefault.jpg" saw the immediate change on the next startup. Brink made an excellent find there over the need to download some program like LogonStudio as mentioned earlier.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

Hi TimIsToXiN.

Did you make sure the .jpeg image was less than 256kb in size?

WARNING: The custom image that you use must be a .jpg image less than 256 KB in size, or this will not work.

Sorry but I simply couldn't help using this one for the 7077 logon screen. It must be all that installation and reinstalls.

The screens used here run about 123kb in size and are simply overwritten when I decide a change is needed. Besides the registry mod seen there you also have to see the new folder "C;\Windows\system32\info" as well as subfolder "C:\Windows\system32\info\backgrouds" created if not present in order for this to work.

The irony when looking in there on the 64bit builds is still seeing the "system32" folder on a 64bit OS!

64-bit Windows 10 Pro

Hello Andy,

Try making the backgroundDefault.jpg file have a smaller resolution size to see if that helps instead. If the image resolution is to large, Windows 7 will still only use the default image instead.

Hope this heps,
